I've got a 1994 1.8 Eunos, had it since last summer, and for the past few months its been in the garage not getting used. I started it today to move it onto the drive and there was quite a strong smell of burning oil and a fair amount of what was definately smoke from the exhaust (got a good lungfull when reversing through it) but I couldn't tell if it was blue or white. It also had the noisy stuck HLA that my old 1.6 used to suffer from after not being driven for a while.

After a gentle warm up drive followed by a good thrashing it seems fine, no obvious smoke, no smell, HLA unstuck and quiet.

I did find the typical CAS leak, I'll sort that over the summer time, but can't find any other obvious issues. Certainly never noticed any smoke / smell etc.. when it was being used a lot in the summer.

So I was wondering what would cause oily smoke after a lay-up?

Worn valve stem seals would by my guess.

Oil is probably slowly seeping through the seals and collecting in the cylinders.

Had a van that did it. Would smoke like buggery if not started for a few days.
