mk1 1993 ..? K& N induction kit
Discussion
I am considering a K&N induction kit for my 1993 1.6 mx5, which is absolutely standard except for a moderately loud sports exhaust
what I am looking for here is a sportier sound, and understand that there will not be any improvement in power
please could I have some feedback from those of you who have fitted this kit , or from any others who might have heard of the pros and cons of this modification
thank-you

I've already drilled the airbox, with first a few then many holes, and it really hasn't made much difference towards the noise (induction roar) that I was hoping for
would changing the oem panel airfilter for a k&n panel filter increase the induction roar?
I would recommend this over a cone filter. Although saying that when i did it i didnt drill my airbox as all this does is pull hot air into the intake just like a cone filter (does make noise though).would changing the oem panel airfilter for a k&n panel filter increase the induction roar?
I found the panel filter give a very small noise increase under hard acceleration which i enjoyed, and it felt to me as if the rev range was a touch looser towards the mid/top end. I wouldnt make any power claims from it though.
If you want cold air, and a nice intake noise, you can have both for far less cost than a K&N panel filter:
Just remove the plastic snorkel on the back of the air box and replace it with a short length of flexible ducting pipe, use a hole saw to make a hole in the bulkhead behind the washer bottle, and stick the end of the ducting through it. The washer bottle can be moved to the right using the right hand captive bolt. Sounds great, and doesn't draw hot air unlike other solutions. Costs less than a tenner.

My thoughts are pretty much the same regarding the K+N panel filter. There's definitely a power improvement, but that's probably because my old filter was clogged in st!Sad Weevil said:

I noticed my mk1 has this, I thought it was standard it does have a rather large no brand cone filter and heatshield on it, does make a rather interesting noise, not sure if it's providing any advantage or not. Contemplating just going back to a standard box.
