Morning all, my daughter's boyfriend is now looking for a UK Mk1 (cheaper insurance for a 20yr old), so if anyone is thinking of selling, please let me know?!

My '93 S Special has piqued his interest, it would appear!

Thanks all

Hi, he has had a similar quote for a UK 1.8 I believe. Is yours an import?

Yeah, Eunos. So, in theory mine should be more expensive.

(Would go for the Eunos for less chance of rust etc)

Mine is a '93 S Special too I think by the way. smile

As Lazza has said a few times, by now most cars will be in a pretty similar shape unless recently imported. They're around 20 years old, so even if imported after 10 years that's still a lot of salt/ bad winter weather etc.

My '93 Eunos S Special was bought as cosmetically challenged but resolutely solid & rust free chassis - original spot welds on arches, original sills that I can jack it up under without any creaking etc etc!

Now that I've fitted the P5 chassis rail strengtheners and a front lower brace, the body actually feels reasonably stiff, certainly compared to the UK 1.8iS that I had previously that had all of the torsional rigidity of a damp flannel - the reasons for that becoming abundantly clear when we cut the outer arches and rear sill outers off to discover newspaper and daylight!!

Does it have to be an NA Nick? My suggestion would be an NB 1.6l car, possibly an NB2/Mk2.5.

Im biased as an NB owner myself, but they are FAR superior cars to any iteration of the NA. After 20+ years of 944 ownership the pop headlamps do nothing for me at all, and when you get past that, which seems to be pivotal for most NA owners, their remaining reasons for preferring the Mk1 are far from convincing (and I can list the ways that NBs are superior).

A 1.6l NB offers a good upgrade path too, if he wants to stick with the cars and look at forced induction.

I have passengered in a couple of Supercharged NBs that have made my 944 Turbo seem lethargic!

Good insurance cover and prices for Mk.2s is certainly harder to find.

Really? I'm 20 the insurance for my MK2.5 1.8 is £940 fully comp! (10k miles a year, parked on drive). When I was looking around for my car the MK2's were marginally higher than MK1's

I did a quote for myself on a comparison site with 0 ncb and got a quote of about £1400 on my car. Depends how much he's expecting to pay for insurance? smile

General consensus is that the insurance drops are 21 and 25, but did you notice a major difference going from 19 to 20? I was playing around with the comparison sites earlier and think an MX5 may be closer than I originally thought.

I think there must have been - At 18, insuring an MX5 for me was too expensive (I couldn't afford the car either mind wink)

Certainly being 20 has lowered my insurance considerably, and not just on the MX5. For example. Using the details in my earlier post (so fully comp, 0 NCB, license for 3 years, 10k miles a year and parked on a drive) these are the quotes I got on much more powerful/ expensive/ prestigious cars.

P38 Range Rover 4.6 - £1190
BMW 535i V8 - £1400
Audi A6 Quattro 4.2 (C5) - £1390

As you're in the North West, it'd be well worth having a craic with Steve Bloxham (Sbloxxy on PH). He specialises in MX5s, and seems to favour the Mk1, and normally has a good few examples in stock.
