Does anyone know of a place I can get a new cylinder head for a late Mk2 1.8?

I thought the head gasket had blown, but a pressure test on the head has shown that it has a crack in exhaust port #2 and as such is scrap....

obviously ebay etc have a one or 2 engines / heads of questionable heritage. Does anyone know of a place that I can get one that may prove to be solid and straight?

Take care to get the right head. I may be telling you what you already know and if so I apologise but the Mk1 and Mk2 heads are not the same. The water jacket holes are in slightly different positions and sizes but more importantly the inlet ports have been moved for the MK2 manifold to improve the output.

They're not the same, but a MK2 head fits a MK1 block perfectly, (and vis versa if you're so inclined). Mechanically you only have to retain the intake manifold - Electrically you need to either remove/tie the VICS butterfly's open, or actuate it via a simple RPM switch, and retain the CAS from the MK1 head - there are no other issues.

Water jacket ports are identical AFAIK, though the available ports are defined by the headgasket. Don't use an NBB headgasket on an earlier engine, particularly if you've performed one of the common coolant re-routes. The NBB headgasket attempted to solve the #4 cylinder running hotter issue prevelant in MK1 and MK2 engines, and whilst it works, running it in conjunction with a coolant re-route causes #1 to run way too hot.
