I'm going to see a Mk3 tomorrow that looks like it's in good condition (recent service/MOT, apparently well looked after), fairly priced, but has been SORN'd since the summer. What should I be looking for given its long lay-up, especially as I'm unlikely to be able to test drive it because of the SORN? Or should I just walk away from it?

Cheers, Paul

My 2007 NC regularly sits in the garage covered up through the winter months - I work overseas alot. I just make sure it has the antifreeze at the right consentrate and the battery is on a conditioner / trickle charger and its always been fine. I guess it all about the condition it was in before it was stored, what the storage is like. Generally you would be looking for the same things as if it had been in full use. Even if its SORN ed I would expect / request that you should be able to see it started up and running ?
Hope this helps.

I'm sure I'll be able to start it and hear it running (I'll walk away if I can't), but won't be able to do the advised quick blast up a dual carriageway. I hadn't thought about the number of 5's that succesfully spend the winter out of service, that's very helpful thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't buy any car that I can't test drive unless it was an absolute bargain. If they really want to sell it they can put tax on it. It'll need to be taxed to be driven away anyway.

Thanks for the feedback guys, as it turned out the car was sold before I got to see it, so problem solved! On to the next one...
