Thinking about changing my exhaust in the new year, it's seen better days and was after people's advice and perspective on a good replacement. I don't want it to be to loud or big, a nice sporty note, ideally keeping price down, no custom jobs or hugely expensive brands. I've been looking at the mx5 parts one, looks the part, any opinions or reviews on this from you guys? Cheers.

I went for this one from MX5 parts: http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/stainless-steel-exhaust-...

Not much louder at all, but a more "sporty" tone to it when you pushed on.

I bought a Cobalt system after being recommended it by House86 on here.

http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.asp...

Really like the sound, quiet when driving through towns etc, makes a lovely sound when accelerating. The tailpipe is a little large for my tastes, but the sound makes up for it. Exhaust fitter remarked on the quality and it lined up perfectly when fitting which is a good sign.

Very happy with my Cobalt exhaust, good build quaility and fit and great price, Moss have sales on frequently so look out for them to get it a bit cheaper smile

Sounds great with a silenced decat, not too loud but sporty when you put your foot down driving

Thanks for all the replies. Is moss the best place to get a cobalt exhaust? The tail pipe does look a little big. Not sure on the lambda sensor plug either.

I'm not sure who else sells the Cobalt system.

I have a '92 1.6 Eunos roadster and bought the system, the lambda sensor bung and the gaskets. The sensor bung was needed (it's just a bolt of the right size) but the exhaust fitter didn't use any of the gaskets. Hope this helps?

Tailpipe is a little large, but after a few months of it being on the car, I don't notice the size!

I also have a silenced decat (from MX5Parts about £50) and it does sound good.

Do a search on YouTube for videos of mx5 exhausts (you'll find the clips House86 uploaded that convinced me) it'll help make your decision.

This is a short video of mine with the exhaust fitted, not the best vid but you get an idea of the sound smile

I've a twin outlet mx5 parts jobbie sat in the garage I keep meaning to stick on eBay or on nutz etc.

It was a tad fruity tho, I ran a quieter mazdaspeed one for trackdays & sold the car with that one on.

I've had real issues with my Cobalt exhaust, first one kept blowing glass fibre all over the back of the car, so took it back for an exchange...

And the second exhaust does exactly the same !! Have emailed Moss but their customer service is not the best !

That's a shame, a Cobalt exhaust was on my list for next year.

Changing the exhaust was one of the first things I did after getting my Mk1! I went for the stainless steel cat back from MX5 Parts, paid £206 for it!

Linky

Looks infinitely better than the rusty peashooter that was the original pipe, and while it's a good bit louder, it's nowhere near being excessively loud, and the tone is way improved.

Before..

After..

It's not over the top large either, the proportions are pretty good IMHO!

I had that. Loved it. They do settle down after a couple of months.

Another vote for the Cobalt system here. Easy to install and sounds great. Also got mine during one of Moss's sales. You will need the blanking plug btw.

Thanks for the advice, pics and vids guys. Will be between the cobalt and mx5 parts one. Whoever has the best new year offers I guess. Both these exhausts seem to fit the job perfectly.

Is it likely that mx5 parts will have a new year sale? 10% off etc?

I had this Sportex back box on my '5 when I bought it.

It was bloody awful - the tailpipe was too big for the car, and it was intolerable on the motorway. Changing it back to standard was one of the best things I've done.

I'm very pleased with the Borla single pipe one I have on mine. It's loud enough to sound good but not so loud that you get disapproving looks from old people when you drive through town.

i have the MX5Parts with decat on mine and i love the way old people look at me disapprovingly through townslaugh.....only to see another old fart driving itlick
We took this to the South of France this year and even cruising the motorways at 85-90 we were still able to have conversation. once off the throttle it settles down into a decently refined state. Bit of footage along the pit wall straight at goodwoodclap
