Was done less than 20k ago, but that was 2008, so probably due a change?

Going to DIY it. Not done one before, mainly down to owning FWD cars and not being able to see what I'm doing.

Any tips or links to guides on doing it? Also, can someone recommend me a decent kit? Is it worth doing the water pump too? Its an R-reg Mk1 with 87k.

Firstly - buy this -

Theres a few editions, but you want the Rod Grainger 1.8ltr manual. NOT a haynes!

If you can read and understand, you can do the belt.

You might have the option of dropping the radiator or leaving it in. Drop it. its easy, and gives you stacks of room to work with.

Do the waterpump, as 99% of the labour is the same as a belt change.

Where are you? If your nearby you can borrow my book and I'll help.

Thanks for the offer, I'm in South Wales, a bit far from you!

I'll try and get hold of one of those books. It was when I replaced the rad I noticed how much rooms there was, so may whip it out to do it.

Second that. Did mine recently, no worries. Additional bonus is that it's a non-interference engine, so if you mess it up, it won't run, but shouldn't make bad expensive noises..

You do need a torque wrench, and a 21mm socket tho. I found that a spark plug socket labelled 14mm fitted nicely, though I had to drop the roll bar mounts off the front subframe to make room for it.

I've got all the tools, just always bottled it before on older cars. The good thing is I can take my time as it's off the road at the moment.

Any recommendations on a belt kit?

Just leave it in gear with the handbrake on to undo the pulley

have you tried that? How would you torque it up after?
