Ok, last night was clear and dry so I decided to head out for a quick top down hoon. Unfortunately as I unzipped the rear window of my Mk1 and tucked it under the rear brace the window developed a 12" crack. I've administered a quick bodge to keep it water tight but what do I do now? Do I have to replace the whole hood? Or can the window section be replaced independently? Answers on a post card please!

Most good hood shops will be able to replace the window.

Vinyl or mohair top?

Vinyl, it's in great nick apart from the window so I don't really want to be replacing the whole thing. I'll have a look and see if there is a local specialist. Thanks

I also have the same problem, right the way across the bottom on mine. The hood itself was brand new and I thought I'd have to replace the lot so this is good news. Any good hood shops in the Lincolnshire/Nottingham kind of area?

Unless you have a rollbar/stylebar (or intend to fit one), it's worth thinking about getting a Mk2 glass-window roof fitted. Much less faffy than Mk1 hoods.

IIRC older windows age harden due to UV exposure.
Problem is most common when the weather turns cold making it brittle.
It might be an idea to run the car for a few miles with the hood up and heater on before trying to unzip it.
A bit late on yours but worth bearing in mind in future.
Cheers, Pewe.

I've got a TR Lane roll bar and a Glass window on my Mk1, its perfectly do-able. Just need to make sure you set all the strap tensions etc correctly, and it doesn't sit completely flat on the rear shelf, but still fine.
