Bit of a rant really, I've had my MX-5 for a couple of months now (Love it biggrin), however I have not had a single friendly wave or flash of lights from any other MX-5 owners. I have always had performance cars, and whenever you see another one on the road you get some sort of wave etc, but not in the MX-5.

Why is this?

I wave. Get waves back about half the time, the rest of the time I get confused looks.

Mk1's tend to wave most presumably because they're driven by enthusiasts who are happy to see another one and are more likely to be owners club members. It gets less likely they'll wave the newer the MX5

Back in the days when there was only the Mk1 everyone waved. Since then though the wave has become rarer and rarer, so much so that now it's a very rare thing.
I blame it on the MX5s success. There are so many of them around and so many people have them just because it's "cute" the wave has gone out of fashion.

there's your problem, it's not a performance car. It's a good car but it's not specific to a type of driver or group of people. You do of course get the enthusiasts but in all honesty it's just a car to the majority of owners.

You'd normally only get a wave if it is something unique or comes with a certain risk, i.e motorcyclist nodding to each other. You don't see m3 drivers flashing or waving at each other or z4 owners which are more performance orientated that the mx5. Now if it was a lotus, tvr, classic mini then yeah it's understandable.

next time you see an mx5 driver take a look at who is behind the wheel and you'll see very little in common between the drivers.

Dont take this the wrong way but if you close your eyes and throw a stone it will hit an MX5!
They are owned by every sort of person you can think of and as such many are not enthusiasts atall.
My wife has one and I am building a special using MX5 gear and we have been to one MX5 meeting, guess what? they were amazingly friendly and diverse.

I would definitely not class MX5 owners as unfriendly.

Weird maybe LOL.

I got a wave from an MX-5 today when I was driving the Elise. Possibly because we both had the roof off.

Had a blast in the Mk1 from N.Wilts over to a mate's place in High Wycombe at the weekend - top down all the way. Saw loads of MX5s top up and top down, even a little convoy round Stadhampton way - the only wave we got returned was from a Morgan driver... we used to get regular waves with our old 2CVs, Heralds, 'bikes, hot rods, all part of the enjoyment if you ask me... with MX5s presumably most are two bust hurrying to that next "wash and perm" to be friendly...

You'll only get a wave if it's a modified one in my experience as the others are all owned by people that don't care about such things! I rarely get a wave but when I do it's always good smile

I never wave.

What's the point? It's a car, big freaking deal if someone else owns one too.

Do you wave at people who are wearing the same trainers you are, or coat?

I'm from Edinburgh, what does your car look like? I always wave to the modified '5s and almost always get a response. Theres also a central scotland mx5 facebook page with quite a few of us on it from Edinburgh if you're interested.

Someone get out of the wrong side of the bed? In a world where everyone ignores each other, its nice to get a nod from someone who has a similar interest as yourself. Although this only really applies to the modified mx5 owners out there.

I might have seen you about. I, until recently, worked at the ski centre. Used to drive into town that way a lot. I'm in a mariner blue k reg with white daises.

I've never had a fellow CLK owner wave at me, and I never instigate a wave when I pass another MX5.

It's only the middle aged baseball cap clad mx5 owners with far too much chrome ste tacked to their car that get wound up about this.

This is hilarious ! I do think the rule should be, wave for roof down, no wave for roof up ! I resent and represent the "old with baseball cap" comment - but its just to stop the bonce getting burned. Roof down no matter what.

Nope, perfectly happy, unlike the people who seem to get overly cross as I don't wave....

It's a pointless escapade.

Ahh a roof Nazi, wonderful.

You do know it's not a reflection of your appendage size if you have the roof down no matter what.

It's November, my roof is down.... and my Hardtop it firmly attached in it's place.

You are missing out on the pleasures of a crisp, sunny but cold winters drive. Heaters blasting (heated seats on also if you've got them) and a nice warm jumper and bombing it down some good roads are one of my best moments with either of my MX5's. In the summer it is no different apart from you dont have the heaters on.
