Morning all,

Hope to get rid of my Rover and be car shopping soon, but my mind keeps going round in a sort of loop:

"I'd like another MX-5."
"It doesn't have enough boot space."
"I'd still like another MX-5."

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a full size suitcase in the boot of an MX-5 without resorting to a luggage rack?

I can't get a full size suitcase in the boot on my Mk1, but this is mainly due to the spare wheel. A mid-size suitcase fits with the wheel in there, just about.

I use soft bags. It's not shaped for the standard hard case.
This was 60% packed prior to the RRG13 trip. Tent, cooking gear. I also managed to get a weekend's worth of clothes in there two, and 5 litres of home brew cider.

You can get MX5-specific luggage:

Potentially yes, If you ditch the spare wheel.

You need to divorce your inner wife. Think of the boot as the suitcase and just throw everything in loose.

I can get my cricket bag packed with all my gear in the back of my Mk1....just, thats with the spare wheel in there. By the way that spare wheel is useless, crappy space saver so may be worth binning anyway. If I had a puncture I would rather not drive with that fitted, plus its probably as old as the car (24) !!!!

Full set of golf clubs & bag in the boot of my Mk2.5. All clubs in the bag except for my driver which has to go in separately.

Am I right in thinking the Mk1 has the biggest boot (at least of the earlier shape models)? Might have to find a friendly PHer to test the boot space at some point. It's not my inner wife that's the problem, it's the outer one - I spend half my life carting her gear around to gigs. biggrin

There are any number of reasons why I shouldn't get another MX-5, but every time I drive my current daily driver down a B-road it tests my resolve. Hopefully we'll be into winter prices in the next few months too.

If anyone has one they'd like to swap for a Rover 75 Tourer give me a shout. wink

Plenty of room for a trip to Le mans. I have 2 "Jazz Bags" which are purpose-made to go on the parcel shelf and they hold loads as well. They aren't made any more sadly, but any soft bags should fit

Depends on what you are looking for. Mk2 has the battery sunken into the boot whereas on Mk1 it's in the boot space so Mk2 is wider.
Mk1 has the spare in the corner of the boot whereas again it's sunken into the boot floor on Mk2, so that robs Mk1 of a fair bit of boot space.
Mk1 has a deeper boot but Mk2 can match that if you leave the spare wheel out.

To be fair, with the spare left out in both Mk1 & Mk2 there isn't much in it at all.

I ditched the donut wheel in favour of a can of tyre weld. Makes a big difference. You can also get a fair amount of stuff in the parcel shelf when the roof is up.

You used to be able to buy a nice set from the owners club, but the company that made them went out of business. There was even a little round bag that sat in the spare wheel. It really was a properly fitting set. Shame it's no longer around.

Don't forget behind the seats and parcel shelf. People always seem amazed at what I manage to pack in mine.

Agree:

I did a two up camping trip for three months carrying a four man tent, gas stove, gas bottle and everything else needed for an extended stay away.

hehe

Well I did see one with a boot rack this morning, which got me thinking. It's just the prospect of having to package your case up in something waterproof, then hope that it doesn't fly off or mangle the boot lid that puts me off. A bit like bike racks...

Being of the Ryanair, hand-luggage clientelle for two weeks B&B touring abroad Mrs Pewe and I usually pack a medium sized, soft bag each (last one I bought was a Kangol one) plus there's room for a couple of small rucksacks, two fleeces and heavyweight jackets, a golf brollie and a tool bag inside the spare wheel.
I'd rather have the spare wheel with me than risk being stranded on top of a mountain with a split tyre that cans of foam won't get anywhere near repairing.
BTW I do have a red bootlid with a strip type luggage rack f/s if you want to consider that (four strips attached to the lid plus a small rear lip)?
Cheers, Pewe.

If you have no friends then removing the passenger seat (2 min job) frees up loads of space.
