So the brake light is constantly on is this a fault or is it warnings ng me that the brakes need attention?

Do you mean the rear lights, or the warning light on the dash,

Warning light on the dash the one that would come on if you had left the handbrake on.

Check brake fluid level or wiring to the resevoir.

Could be a dicky handbrake switch.

This. I had the same warning light on my dash. If the fluid level is low, you'll want to determine where it's gone... The brake system shouldn't leak. Check the surface of the servo underneath the master cylinder seal - the paint will be corroded if any brake fluid has made its way onto it.
