Dear Mazda - Caterham get a rorty, spitting 210Bhp out of the Duratec engine (Caterham R400), so why not stick the same engine upgrades in an MX5!?

All the current MX5 is lacking from a petrolhead's perspective, is some more fire in it's belly. Not too much, not too little, 210Bhp would be perfect I reckon. Keep the current Sport tech chassis set up, give it a rortier exhaust system and the 210Bhp Duratec motor - result - a Porsche Cayman baiter!

So Mazda, please - make it happen! It would be a great send off to the current generation.

If you agree PH collective, log your support here - maybe if we get enough PH support Mazda will listen.....

Mazda won't do it.

They're just building these normal cars they say have 'Spirit'.. I've told them plenty of times, our Regional Manager, Aftersales Manager.. All of them that they need to build an MX5 with more power. It'll never happen frown

Well start us off on a positive note! rolleyes If enough of us petition for it, perhaps they will (I live in hope) It'd be a great competitor to the forthcoming Toyota FT-86 - and lower weight too. So c'mon peeps - back the bid!

Why would they? Just so us geeks are happy.. But, emissions will be higher.. Insurance, higher.. Less MPG.. The public won't buy it, thus Mazda won't make it.

Sticking some badges on it and painting it a different colour, whilst still getting reasonable MPG, reasonable tax etc, public will buy it.

Sorry for being negative, but they haven't done a proper engined MX5 since the BBR and won't do frown

Jonny works for Mazda, though, so it's a bit of a /thread post when he states they won't do it.

I suspect that might change on the production of 1000 one thousand pounds deposit cheques, but you'll never find out biggrin

hehe

Not necessarily! tongue out

But, I've told them plenty of times they need to build one with a more powerful engine and they laugh it off frown

OP; You get a list of names for a performance MX5 with gurantees that they'll buy them, £1000 non refundable deposit and I'll forward it onto Mazda..

wink

No need for a more powerful 5. Consider a lighter 5! Surely they could lose 100kg? No?

As much as we don't like the idea it seems that the target market for 5s for quite some time has been the "happy widow" crowd. To them it's a nice "sporty" little number to brighten up the driveway and trips to the salon or golf club.

This is why the after-market market seems so strong. It's a great car to personalise.

Exactly! It's just there to please everyone really, it's not really a performance sports car, imo.

I think they were supposed to be bringing one out in a few years, but seems it's 2015 now apparently.

Never going to happen. How many of the MX5 enthusiasts buy brand new cars, very very few. They wait until the car has been owned by grandad for 5 to 6 years and then buy it for a fraction of the cost. Lets face it if I had +£20K to spend on a car I doubt I'd buy a brand new MX5, even if it did have 210bhp.

Besides who says they need more power, I'm more than happy with the 260bhp mine's currently producing.

Could hair dressers afford the isurance?
Okay a below belt shot, but the first users of MX5's are not as interested in performance as we are.

Not sure where I stand on this. More power will be more expensive to run over all, less will be bought new, then used values stay higher across the board, supply and demand and all that (i think!). The attraction for me with the MX5 is that it is a relatively 'normal' car to run. Similar mpg, insurance, tax etc. No rare or unusual parts that require specialist knowledge etc. Not scary to drive for the novice and easy to enjoy at legal speeds.

If you want more power its all there in the after market.........

....who am i kidding! Mazda please build one!

Nail. Head, really... Average Jo wont pay the premium for a premium MX5; the price it will cost will put it into competition against other cars that will be more popular etc, so Mazda wont be able to sell them.

We just need to make sure they keep churning out cars that can be / can handle the upgrades thumbup

I'd rather see a lighter/more focused MX-5, than one with considerably more power. To me the 5 is about the handling and balance if I wanted something faster I would go for a hot hatch.

Isn't there a new MX5 due out next year? If so, then it wouldn't make sense for them to change the current model now. I'm sure I've read that the remit of the new car is to be more like the Mk1, smaller and lighter, so I can't see them going for a more powerful engine than the current one.

I have a 1.8 Mk2.5 and I love everything about, just wish for a bit for oomph! I know it does not need the extra speed, but it would be nice if their was an option to do so. Feels a lot slower now I have a bike too, so that doesnt help.

There's a multitude of options on a MK2.5, It's basically a spruced up MK1 so supercharging or turboing is easilly done with a few spare k.

I'm pretty certain TR Lane are now providing a drive in/drive out service. Drop off a standard Mk2 and pick-up a supercharged one a week later. You may have to provide the supercharger or fuelling system, but these are pretty easy to pick-up on Ebay or Nutz.
