csl or 02 996 c4s????
Discussion
a good CSL will be more unique and engaging, should hold it's money better, but to the uneducated (some people are more bothered about other people's opinions) they may see it as not in the same league as the 996.
CSLs are wonderful, it won't be as refined as the C4S, but if you venture near a circuit you'll really understand what it's all about..

Had the same choice a little while ago - Loved the look of the 996 C4S when it first came out and promised myself one. Lately, I have started to think they havent aged so well when you compare them with a 997 C4S (front end maybe ?). Just my opinion.
Depends on requirements - CSL more akin to GT3 and the merits of both have been discussed at length. 996 / C4S probably more comparable with M3 CS.
Depends on your requirements / use / budget etc, but would say if you buy any of the above, you'll have no regrets.
I bought a CSL but fancy a GT3 (or GT2) at some poin in the future !

You know what, tickles me this thread. I owned a CSL back in 2005, drove it down to Silverstone Porsche to trade it in for a 911 996 Turbo X50. On the way down I wasnt really sure I was doing the right thing,I had a really weird feeling that I was silly, usually when swapping cars over Im really excited about the new one, on this occasion I was quite reserved and unsure, but never the less I did it. Felt like I was losing a great car, but hey I was blinded by the first time ownership of a Porsche Turbo.
Since that time I went on to own a 997 C4S, a 997 GT3...as much as I tried I never really 'loved' a Porsche, as try as I might. Cut a long story short, I ended up in an 08 612 Ferrari which I had to sell to finance a house move, umm'd and arr'd about what to replace it with, and ended up with a TDv8 RR sport for the Mrs & I bought a 53 plate CSL ( black as my earlier one was ) with 33k on the clock.
My conclusion:- I love the CSL, the noise, the feel...the Porsche does not even come close in the whole experience in my book,It felt really special getting back in the CSL, and 2 months on still loving it and really happy I have made the right choice, there is nothing I would rather have even if I had £40k extra to spend... should of saved myself a load of £££ and turned back that day I went to trade my CSL in for the 996 TT.
So IMHO dont go Porsche, it doesnt get better than a CSL, trust me!.

I better just qualify that last post. I am fortunate enough to work 5 miles from where I live, I dont do any business mileage either. The fact that the Mrs has a RRS, means that we can go off for long journeys or family trips in that. Hence the CSL works well for as a 'play' car for me. I am not sure if I was relying on it as my only family car, or if I needed to do 20k business miles a year that it would be such a good choice, possibly a C4S could be better day to day if you needed to put many miles on it, I was purely judging the cars based on my sub 5k annual miles type of driving, for which the CSL is fantastic.
Has to be the CSL IMO, totally superb car. The C4S is still a great car but if you're looking to compare apples with apples then you need to be looking at the GT3 as the main porker in their stable to compare to a CSL. The C4S and CSL are both very different weapons with different purposes.
