2nd hand CSL - What's realistic ?
Discussion
Guys
Without wanting to start a "just started looking, what to look out for" thread....had a few specific questions:
1. 24-28K budget, am I being realistic in thinking I'll be able to pick up a reasonably straight car for this?
2. How much previous track use is considered "acceptable" / are there any obvious diagnostic checks that should be performed e.g use of lauch control ? In addition, are there any obvious mods (e.g. AP's) which shout "hard life" ?
3. Aside from PH / mtorque, what are the most accurate sources of information / useful sites ?
4. Per Porsche / Peter Morgan, are there any individuals considered well qualified to perform a PPI (particularly in the SE/London) ?
5. BMW Warranty - how much is the annual renewal and (I assume) this is a no brainer / is there a mileage or age limit ?
6. Aside PH / Autotrader, where do sellers usually advertise ?
Assume the "Buy on condition, not mileage" mantra applies.....I only intend on using it as a w/e toy putting on 4-5K p.a.
All input appreciated..
Cheers

1. yep. Without wanting to start a "just started looking, what to look out for" thread....had a few specific questions:

2. It's a track car, it can take all you can throw at it.
I would see any extras as a bonus myself.
3. cslregister is a good start.
4. not a clue in your area, but the things that do go like bushes etc. could be checked by anyone.
5. I think around £800 for a sub 60k mile car and around £1500 for one that has gone over. Maybe a little more if it has lapsed or you want to pay monthly.
6. That is where you will see them all.
I would definitely buy on condition, don't get put off by owners either, these are 6 years old now and so 5+ owners is to be expected more than it is a shock.
mine gets a fair bit of stick but it's pretty mint and I have never tried the launch control - I don't see the point unless I was entering a sprint with it.
It seems to stand up to track work exceptionally well, it has surprised me. It feels like it will take all the abuse I can muster for a good 10 years yet!
I would just buy on condition and try to perhaps make sure it's not just some rich blokes track toy. I am sure some road miles between track days do it some good!

I don't think you can get a better car for the money-gt3?ur gonna need another 15k to find a similar performance & as far as reliabilitys concerned mines never let me down yet(hopefully not speaking too soon!).I looked at loads & the only thing I would say to look out for is the general tattiness of the car,why would someone spend all that money on a car & then not keep on top of maintainence??
From personal experience I prefer the saphire black colour but it really is a soft paint-swirl marks & stone chips are comon so if a car has them you can factor in a detail or front end blow over to knock down the price.alloys do not like salt on roads & depending on your own view cup tyres are either a bug plus or a liability with increased wear & poor wet weather performance.
Check out the next service interval as well, inspections don't come cheap if you want to remain within the dealer network for those stamps in the book. Launch control is a white elephant in my opinion-I've never used it & I think a lot of the suspician around it stems from the handbook saying it will prematurely wear out the drive train. More attention should be given to the inlet valve-accelerating with the sport button pressed should give a marked difference in induction noise-there are some very slow ones out there!
Apart from that nothing else stands out from all the ones I looked at.like I said if a cars tatty around the edges it usually shows how it's been cared for.as for mods work out what you need & if a car has them then your saving on spending, try a standard set up first though-me personally the standard set up is fine

yep decent budget for a 20-40k mile car, and if you want to track it look for some decent mods already done
