My CSL seems to be making a noise from the rear drivetrain. This noise does disappear after some driving and the fluid has warmed through. My recent E46 M3 prior to this never made such noise and the BMW mechanic puts the blame on my CSL's rear diff which may need replacement. Has anyone here experienced similar problem? Could it be fixed with different synthetic oil grade? My CSL is running in Thailand and currently has only 10,000 km on the clock.

Any suggestion is much appreciated.

The rear diffs are renound for going, I recon you are looking at a replacement. Get your BMW dealer to check it out and put in a claim against the warranty or failing that a goodwill claim.

What's all this "Rear diff" talk. The CSL only has one diff, so there is no need to pinpoint its location.
Save that kind of talk for the Land Rover forum please.

W1TAK - Thanks for your suggestion. My recent visit to BMW dealer didn't seem the warranty claim is possible, I will have to investigate more into that matter.

Dave - Excuse me for being a bit naive. Regardless of the CSL diff's location, I was trying to refer to the noise from the rear which I then suspected was coming from the diff.

Just wondering if you have any other comments to add other than going to the 4x4 forum.

Cheers,

Can you be more specific about the noise? Is it a knocking, a clunk, a grinding noise maybe?

Hi Ayde.
"Lash" in the drivetrain is quite common in the CSL, and I have heard of owners having their diffs replaced due to other noise issues but so far I haven't had this problem.
Sorry I can't be any more help that that.

I had a grating noise from my E46 M3 (prior to owning the CSL) which occured around 60K miles. It was fixed by draining the fluid and replacing with new stuff.
I didn't think this would cure it but presto it did!

Based on my experience I would change the diff oil first before considering a rebuild or replacement.

lol, Quiaffe, not sure I'd consider that an upgrade over the M Diff? If you'd said Drexxler or some other proper plated diff you'd have had some credence.
