What you should be asking is which ones are quicker, black or grey?

yes black ones are faster.

From official BMW figures, apparently only 27 were supplied as automatics.

Bizarre...

SMGII isn't an auto (it uses a clutch not a torque converter) so you should check again wink

CSL is SMG 2

a sequential gearbox called by BMW an 'automated manual gearbox' where the operations of the clutch and gearbox are performed by an electronic-hydrolic system

S = sequential mode
D = automated mode

all in the manual if you have one

The registration document says Manual
However, as there is no clutch pedal and therefor no need to learn clutch control, do you really need a manual license to drive one????

They are an automated gearbox as the changing of gear can be all taken car of by the gearbox itself. I think we don't call it an auto as it does not work in the same way as we normally think of an auto box. You can have a sequential gearbox that still has a clutch pedal, one that works like a motorbike gearbox where selecting the gears is don by knocking the stick eithe forward or backwards without the usual "H" pattern.

Where does it say that?

I've heard people mention that before, and every time I've looked at my doc I can't find any mention of the transmission type (or is it one of the numeric codes?)

Just curious.

Hi E.
How about that then! It is confirmed....As usual I am talking complete b0llux.
I have a number of V5s here and none of them state anything about transmission type.
