Is it normal with a CSL when changing up through the gears for the rear diff to clunk quite hard if you dont lift off the accelarator between gear changes,on most cars this wouldnt be a normal way of driving but i thought the smg gearbox was supposed to make this possible?

Yes totally normal and of course more pronounced (ferocious!) in S6 mode. Whether it does the diff any good or not is another question .... I know a few people who have had them replaced under warranty. My diff mounts have been replaced ...

I had the diff replaced in my old CSL, the problem was most obvious at low speeds when changing from 2nd to 1st, there was an obvious knock. On inspection there was quite a bit of free play in the diff.

Is it an expensive job a new diff on a Csl?

No not that I can feel.

Kayc ... not sure on price, everyone I know has had them done under warranty. One was replaced in fact when it wasn't even damaged. The BMW technicians assumed there should be no play when apparently this is normal ...

Im confused as to why they get damaged so easily when the company that makes them must have surely tested them for durability? Its a fairly nasty sound and surely something that no one would want to hear happening?

Good question! I'm not sure if its a CSL specific issue or E46 M3's in general. Maybe ask the question to a wider audiance over on BM3W.

The cars fragility is overhyped IMO ... there are a few problems ... clutch being one weak area but being a consumable, its not so much of a problem .... at the moment, I think its better to buy a BMW warranty with a CSL though.
