The car has begun to make a grinding/graunching sound. It appears to be coming from the gearbox region and only seems to happen when the car is fully warm and up to operating temperature. The sound is only made when under load and is bad enough so it has to be driven on a light throttle otherwise the noise gets too loud. Any ideas would be greatfully received as it's a bit of a worrying issue. By the way, gearbox was replaced on the car a while back along with the clutch and flywheel but off the top of my head i cant remember how many miles ago.

Cheers in advance.

Had a similar thing on a previous 996, that was a diff driveshaft bearing - at least thats what I seem to remember it was. Needed a new gearbox, cost a bloody fortune because you couldn't apparently buy bits from Porsche, just a new gearbox!

It sounds like a diff or a g/box not cheap!

a g/box £4465 inc vat
a diff £1685 inc vat

I would take it to a BMW dealer and get them to find out exactly what it is and see if they will ask BMW GB for goodwill if the cars out of warranty.

Also they did do a new diff oil which stopped the diff noise which was common when the m3 come out dont know if it aplies to the csl though might be worth asking a dealer.
