CSL runnig costs and depreciation
Discussion
Having sold my TVR, I’ve started looking for something fast and exciting. Finally got round to test driving an M3 at the weekend. Liked it – but maybe not quite raw enough.
So, I find myself looking through AutoTrader and am amazed how much CSLs have dropped from 60k!
So, couple of questions:
a) Are prices still tumbling
b) Is the CSL a likely future classic?
c) Maintenance wise – are CSLs more expensive to run than M3s.
Thanks.

I bought my CSL last August for £38K on an 04 plate with 12,000 miles on the clock, top spec in top condition. It's now done 27K miles and I don't expect to get any more than £33K for it (give or take).
Running costs have been good - it was serviced 15,000 miles later at a cost of around £600 quid. Apart from that I've put new discs and pads on it for £1200. The rest of the stuff has been fixed under warranty.
Try to get one with warranty remaining either extended or still within it's 3 years.
I'm still on the same set of tyres since August 04 !
MPG is showing 27.9 on the display.
A lot of car for the money. Have a look at the Pistonheads classified section it's got a good few examples of CSLs on there.
Don't get an M3 you will regret it - the CSL is simply leagues ahead in every department.

a) I think prices are holding out pretty well on good examples.
b) I would like to think so. Im keeping mine and it would be good if it does turn out to be one - also, for the money, like said before, its a lot of car and is also practical i.e. i will be loading it up with suitcases/duvet/fishing rods and off to the Isle of Wight next week.
c) This is my first BMW so cant compare to an M3 but i've had mine since June 2004 with 4000 miles and had some bits done under warranty i.e. rtabs replaced, new steering wheel. As im not selling mine, I didnt renew the warranty. Its just had Inspection 1. Had new back brakes (pads & discs), oil change, coolant change (had it done early, this is meant to be done after 4 years). They also found oil leaking on the prop shaft. This was going to cost £500 to fix but as the car has low mileage (22k) and has not long been out of warranty (september 06) they got some goodwill from BMW and it only ended up costing me £75 for the labour. The total cost was £1360 which I didnt think was bad for the time I have had it. The cup tyres dont last that long and I will need to get some new ones in time for Sept 07 MOT (approx £900-£1000) but you can always get some PS2's which will last longer.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. With regards to the cup tyres, are these 'just legal / slicks'? Can more 'normal' tyres be fitted?
Recently changed from TVR to CSL. The beemer isnt as raw, but the build is better, the engines still a screamer and the overall feel is of being in something special.
Highly recommended. I was going to get a GT3, but absolutely no boot space.
CSL is a good choice.
Future classic- definately and I believe that prices are strong.
Try buying a Tuscan S and trading it after a year- you will be sick.
Get a well cared for car and im sure you will be happy. As with TVRs dont be scared of track use as the owners tend to be more on the ball with maintenance.

very expensive to run imo
tyres £1000
insurance £1000
main service £1000
warranty £1250
disks £1000
infact every thing is £1000 and no one seems to put any miles on them which i find odd.
I sold mine for 31.5k with 27k on it, mint with warranty and only needed a new set of front disks.
Mpg 22mpg I find people who say 27 or more are just not driving it.
I thinks its a very expensice car to run as an only car which is why i sold it.
But a great car and the 60-100 Mph was just fantastic.

You can get 30+ mpg on long journeys at 80mph, 15-18mpg commuting through town.
Warranty is £1050 - not going to bother next time round
oil service £180
inspection 1 £620
inspection II £900
Cheap to run for the performance IMO, have done 26k in mine in just over 2 years and it has been great, AP brakes pay for themselves if you track it as the pads last much longer.
