Thinking of getting a Supersprint or Milltek mid section replacement for the exhaust and cannot make my mind up whether I need the extra noise. I know it has been discussed before but I am too stressed (at work) to make my mind up and need some fresh thoughts on whether to do it or not.

Points to consider:

Will the wife notice if I pootle about? (she is not often foxed and her hearing is pretty good) - she is averse to any form of upgradeitus following my expensive efforts on the last car.

Will my little daughter (19 months) be upset by the noise? She seems to like the existing noise as she goes "brooooom brooooom" when she gets in the back of the CSL but not in the back of my wifes E class.

Spoke to a BM specialist selling a used Supersprint at the moment and he said I would be mental to put this on a CSL.

Wise thoughts from those who have gone to the other side would be welcome.

Carl

I ran a GruppeM backbox on my standard M3 and there was no mistaking it was 'LOUD'. Still have the box and will be fitting it to my CSL but I am aware that it will be even louder on that. Almost all aftermarket backboxes are boomy at low revs so your missus will suss you out straight away. There is no way to adjust your driving to prevent it either, although the wail you get when giving it the beans will ensure you won't hear the missus moaning about it!! hehe

If you like to be stealthy in your car, forget changing the exhaust. If like me you use the car occasionally and don't mind if it turns heads under accellaration then do it. Unfortunately there is no way of having both scenarios. The noise under full power is addictive, although your neighbours will hate you for it.

If you are looking for a more subtle approach, then a better way is to keep the standard backbox and change the cats to 100 cell race ones. Gives a nice burble to the exhaust note without being offensive and is more effective at liberating a bit more power too.

Cheers but it is only the mid section that I am going to change. The manifolds and back box remain the same. By changing the centre section I will only be removing the centre silencer. A few people have performed this without changing the back box on here.

I have the SuperSprint mid. On statup it is quite noisey. It gets quiter after a few minutes. On 'normal' driving it is not loud, but go above 3.5k revs and it will scream and produce a lovely rasp!

Getting excited already! Most people complain about the rattly and raspy noise the CSL makes when it is cold but I like it as it reminds me of how raw the car is. I also like waking the lazy neighbours up!

Does it pop or bang more as a result of the reduction in back pressure increased flow.

Yes, I love the sound it makes when it's cold, usually around 2500rpm, sadly it goes after about 3 minutes but I've just brought a cheap backbox to put on so we'll see what difference this makes.
