Hi guys
I'm soon to be leaving Porsche and looking to get a 03/04 CSL.
Any pointers as to 'must haves'. I know it's a sacrilige but I probably won't be tracking the car that often (if at all).
I know I want Climate and the CD.
Are the AP brakes a must?
There don't seem to be many black ones around - anyone know the ratio of black:graphite manufactured?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

The there are about 80 Black ones. The AP brakes are mainly for the track guys, I doubt very much you will need them if you dont intend to track it. I may be getting one too, most likely in black. The main options I would like are a cd player, AC and xenons. I've heard the black ones are worth less but I cant see this being true as the black ones are very rare.
Whilst the black does mask the CF roof etc as a whole I think they look better than the SG, and they are known to be quicker
For me, must haves are AC, CD although the speakers are rubbish and I'd far sooner listen to the induction anyway, and Xenon's. Wouldn't bother with PDC, rain sensors etc etc.
One of the finest cars ever made IMHO.

Impressive garage you've got there (Whats an AC Ducati though?)
Boring irrelevant question now about CSLs - whats your opinion on depreciation regarding them? They are astonishingly good value at the moment IMO....will they keep plummeting?

They have been hovering around the mid 30's mark for quite a while now. You can see them advertised at BMW dealerships for 35k and less which is good I think and early 30's for private. I am thinking about getting a 996 C4S after christmas or maybe a CSL now. Have you driven one?
Residuals dropped quite sharply when they first came out, presumably because badge-buyers couldn't understand why they were so much more expensive than a conventional M3 (the idiots!). They've flattened out now, and have been about £35k from a dealer for 12 months or so.
Word on the street is that they'll start climbing in the long run, as they're so great and so rare.

I know it will be a different style of car but do you think the new M3 will hit the residuals on the csl? Especially if the new standard M3 is quicker than the csl...or am I speaking nonsense?

Is it important for a 'wide boy city type' like yourself to purchase a car at an inflated price so you can shrug off the depreciation question in those 'car talk pub chats' in a flippant & dismissive manner?

Yes indeed. I hope to Christ they don't start rising! Unless of course it's before I manage to get one

Apparently not. It won't be quicker, and it'll be significantly less focused (or so I've heard). The word is that it's heading towards "cult" status like the 964 RS. That wasn't highly prized, until the 993 RS came out and people realised how good the 964 was. Or so I'm told, I've never driven either!
Best bet would be to wait until the new M3's been out a couple of months, then all the badge-buyer on-up-man-shippers will drop their CSLs to move to the current model, and you can take you pick.

Black is best and I'm not aware of the black ones being any cheaper.
AirCon and xenons are musts as far as I'm concerend. The brakes are fine for road use. I only ever got fade on some really intense days. The APs are supposed to be good, but many people say the original disks are better than the AP ones.

The thing is its a long time to wait. I have sleepless nights now and it will prove to be more and more difficult to find a good one the longer I leave it. It sounds like I should get one right now but I need to be 3000% sure.

Hmm... I'm not normally wild about black, unless it's kept polished up and has a nice loud interior, and I can't be bothered polishing all the time! "Black on black" seems the chosen combo of drug dealers everywhere, and M3's are their chosen steed (although generally cabs) so it kind of puts me off. That said, the only CSLs you ever see are grey, so black's got a certain benefit. But it does hide the roof, so people will be less aware that your car is different to all the other M3's.
As for residuals, they may take a short-term drop when the new M3 hits the streets, but it's doubtful and they'll recover in the long term.
It's a PH thing with bikes, they don't appear in the list, hence AC, but just a normal Ducati 999R, sadly no longer, so thanks for the reminder swapped for a manic R500 which I have now broken
For me the SB CSL's look slightly more menacing. I'm quite happy that the general unwashed can't tel the difference between the SB CSL and an ordinary M3. Those in the know 'know'. I'm not looking to impress anyone and I'm happy that it looks discreet.
My wife couldn't understand why we got the CSL as it looked so normal, until I took her out in it. The ultimate Q car!!
I think that the values will soon level out, and as someone else has remarked, it is a future classic along with the 964 and 993RS's. Get one now whilst you can still get a good low mileage one.
As to brakes, I thought the problem was more pad related, but not an issue for the road anyway.
You won't regret it.

I am now utterly convinced. I'm also starting to prefer the SB ones which is handy.
Hopefully I'll be in a position to get one in a fortnight or so
I'll let you know - thanks for the advice.
Xenons, Aircon and Silver Grey are musts. Make sure you get cups and csl alloys as well. Don't be girlie and put anything other than cups on the baby.
Black is so yesterday. You can't see any of the ontrasting carbon panels in black, and the subtle curves of the front arches and rear haunches are disguised by the 'eighties' colour.
Put pagid pads and decent fluid and hoses on the car if you do a track event. APs for serious track goers only.
