CSL SMG update
Discussion
Hi,
I recently took the CSL in for a service and MOT at BMW, and asked them to check the gearbox software version as was getting tired of some fairly hesitant low speed set off's.
Anyway, turned out it didn't have the latest version, so got them to update it (theres no reference of the invoice so can only assume this is 'the' latest version). On initial drive away, the hesitant set off was cured, however after few miles of low speed driving, especially in auto, changes feel very mechanical with a bit of a thump as the clutch drops in. It is also noticeable in low gears without a change, if the accelerator is lifted then pressed again, there is a thump, that sounds like the clutch re-engaging, but with no change requested, this doesn't sound right. At first i put this down to the software learning the clutch, put its now been 6 months or so since the change and a few hundred miles (not many i know but enough i would have thought).
I know the SMG isn't going to be silky smooth, and all is easily sorted with a bit of right foot and manual changes with a slight lift, but it does feel odd at low speeds, especially in traffic and am a bit worried that some damage may be done, as it didn't feel like it does now with the older software version.
Can anyone tell me if this is totally normal for this 'latest version' or if i should take it back for a look over?
Cheers
Jim

The harsh change and diff wrench is typical on CSL. The software updates basically slow down the gear changes to avoid clutch slip later. But the retreaching of the gearbox software they have to do has probably solved the problems you had anyway even without the update.
Two tips are
1. Do not lift accelerator on gear changes
2. Thrash the car every now and then, eg trackdays solve any start of clutch slip which grows with lazy road driving
