First time M buyer. M3 E46 or M5 E39????
Discussion
I've been disapointed by previous cars for years and this weekend woke up to the realisation that something is missing. In the shape of an M badge.
Now the dilema looms????
What M is best for me.
Driven both the above mentioned and to be honest both make me smile!!!!!
Budget lies around £16k but need something tidy (Not messed around with) and fairly low miles.
Any suggestions??

Youve already done the hard bit and narrowed your choice down to two of the best cars ever made, now ignore the biased opinions of PH and go out and drive some. That will make your mind up.I had the same dilema last year, drove a few M5s, loved the low down grunt and V8 soundtrack, then tried some M3s. Didnt like the power delivery of the I6, felt a bit gutless and strained IMO, and from the behind the wheel it felt far less special to drive.
So I got a beast in imola red. Comfortable, practical, insanely fast, classy & muscular good looks and great handling. Sorted.
depends how you like to drive and with what sound track, If you like to rev it's ass off and like the scream of a racer then the M3 is for you . If you want to think your in the car chase from the film Bullit with the sound track and speed, like driving on a wave of torque ,then wring it's neck out the M5 is for you. Both are great and I don't think there is a wrong decision. I chose an M5(with hayward-scott exhausts) and have no regrets.
What ever buy a nice example.

I would have bought it in a heart beat mate, if only it wasnt an smg.Lovely looking car
They are both amazing cars and in normal fast road driving you wont notice any difference in pace, you just dont need to change gear as often in the '5.
I got the M5 as they are a bit rarer, I fancied a V8 and wanted the pinnacle of M development (joking, dont flash up!)
I would have an M3 next, I know I would love it just as much. They are both great all rounders. Im
afraid its down to you!

Take the limiter of the M5 and prepare to be enthralled.
It's the best car ever made for practical, day-in, day-out road driving.
It doesn't promote Evo/Scooby type urban blitzing the way the smaller car does, it simply bides it's time until masses have cleared, bades you drop a cog, gently-does-it then press the detonator.
Past 4000 rpm it starts to howl and by 6000 you are in full flight.
I won't repeat the speeds we have attained, easily and with crushing, solidly poised rapture but they are genuine and emphatically supercar qualifying.
In fact, the way it 'sits' at vast velocities whilst describing momentous sweepers is about as good as any car I can recall; flat and essentially understeer free.
Honestly, joyously and repeatedly sublime.
The quintessential, automotive no brainer.

Daz - not sure the M5 would cost more to run - the servicing on the e46 M3 is considerably more and even at a Dealership with mine qualifying for 6+ servicing (my BMW Warranty dictates dealership servicing although I have other non-warranty work done at a nearby Indie), servicing the 5 is manageable. Expensive but manageable........

SOLD....Watched this video then dedicated the weekend to finding the one for me.
I'm proud to report I purchesed the below vehicle and haven't been able to remove my smile since!!!
Next port of call is where to see if I can replicate Tiff's demonstration somewhere quiet in Essex.
Any ideas?
Many thanks for all the posts.
You're all legends.

that is one of the best posts I've ever read on PH - your choice of words sums up the M5 perfectly. It's the best car ever made for practical, day-in, day-out road driving.

IMHO - I've had both and the M5 does it better............
