Depends which version M5 you're talking about? e39 (V8) or e60 (V10)?

And I'm assuming that you mean the saloon M3 otherwise you are comparing apples to oranges IMHO.

And on what basis? Daily use? track only? having a family? running costs? desireability? receiving w@nker hand gestures? etc etc etc

You're never going to get an answer Tom. Its what you prefer mate. I have driven an E60 and yes, it was pretty fantastic, I could never own one until I get myself a tow truck so my wife could come get me all the time.

If you're bored of your car, which it sounds like you are, when not deviate from the marque?
