My e46 M3 will only start when being jump started.
Without doing this when turning the key, the lights on the dash come on, as does the radio, but the engine wont start. So I think the battery is getting a charge.
It only does this now and again. Some times it'll be ok for a few times then it wont start.
So does this sound like a major problem, that's going to cost an arm and a leg?
Also can anyone recomend a good independant garage around the Witney area of oxfordshire?
Many thanks.
Kieron

Starter motor. Looks like you need a new one. Couple hundred pound and about 4 hrs labour on average.

ETA This: http://www.type2.com/bartnik/starter.htm

A good, general, guide to troubleshooting the starter motor.

How do you know it's not the battery? Call the AA and they will test the battery first.

EDIT - just noticed only occasional. I had the same problem on a lotus elise. It was the stater solenoid. A tap with the screwdriver helped fix it. Not as simple on a BMW though frown

Thanks for the advice. Now all I have to do is find a good indy in my area.
Anyone know of one in the Witney/west of Oxford area?

I would test the battery first, nip to your nearest Kwik Fit for a free test as I had a simillar problem to yours and it was the battery at fault.
