I know the correct Oil is.... (E46 M3)

Castrol 10W60 however...unusually my oil light came on and was miles from any BM dealer so had to get to nearest garage, the only decent stuff they had was a litre Mobile 1 15w/50 which I believe is available as the only alternative...instead of risking having no oil i chucked a few dollops of this in for the short-term...

Oil change due in 4K miles..do you think this will be a problem or should I change oil sooner?

apparently you can top it up with any decent 10/40 or 15/40, i read that somewhere, only got my M3 this week but have booked it in next week for an oil change.

Using either or a combination of both will not harm your engine. Cold reving or extended high RPM is what will. People place to much concern on their oil type, so long as its fully synthetic and around the right viscosity ratings you cant go wrong! All IMHO of course but TBH any decent oil is easily up to the job now a days!
