Never driven a 944 turbo but have owned a 968 and a e34 M5. Much prefer the Porsche, feels like a sports car all the time where as the M5 felt like a sorts car only when you pushed it.
Porsche cheaper to run as well, M5 does 20mpg at best!
M5 was great, never got away from the feeling though that it was a BIG bill just waiting to happen...

e34 M5 does 17mpg round town and will quite easily do 28mpg on a run - mine even managed to get back from the 'Ring to Colchester on one tank (admittedly due to not being able to rev above 3500rpm). My average over 100,000 miles was 22mpg, including track days where I got 6mpg.
Agree that they're not cheap to run as a daily driver though!
