Hi Guys. I have an e46 M3 which had it's bumper stolen recently. It's with a helpful pragmatic dealer who is doing the repair. I want to ensure it doesn't get stolen again as the M3 lives in the street.

I have just had the following email from the dealer.

"Regarding using locking bolts,it is not a option on a M3 bumper is it is not fixed on like sport bumpers. It is held on by four ball and socket that are mounted on carbon fibre and foam and three 8 mm head screws on each side.( see att images). If we bonded the ball and sockets this would just pull out off their mountings. looking at the bumper and car the only possible extra fixings we could do is to screw/cable tie through the side mounts and in to the bumper(see image att),not sure how much this will stop any one stealing the bumper."

I have suggested they use steel cable wraps but wondered if there are other suggestions from the pistonheads crew.

There is some stuff here;

but I think this does not apply to M3 bumpers, only M sport bumpers.

Does your car not have a motion sensor alarm?
Also why no solder or weld the nuts onto the bolts?

I'm sure I have read that a few guys over on Mtorque are holding their bumpers on using locking wheel nuts.

I find it absolutely disgusting that people are now needing to modify their cars to protect them from these little scrotes.

When I'm in charge they will be hung, drawn and quartered. rage

I've posted on Mtorque but there are no replies. The dealer seems to think that locking nuts won't work on M bumpers. Only M Sport bumpers.

Could you take a spur off from the bonnet switch and mount it somewhere to push into the rear of the bumper?

If you lock your car the alarm is set. If someone lifts the bonnet, that switch going open circuit will set the alarm off. If you could wire another switch in after that that secures somewhere and touches teh inside of the bumper, if they get the bolts off and wiggle it free the alarm will go right off.

May scare them enough to allow them to scarper / give you time to chase them down.

should be relatively easy to wire up and test smile
