Just spotted this car and under the options list it states 'press preparation'. So does this mean it has had the balls thrashed off it by a load of talentless hacks?

http://bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/auc/car_details/0,,1260_159...

Would you buy?

There's a few reviews it's featured in. Just type into google z4m review and it'l come up.

Up to you personally. It's got a warranty from the dealer so you'd be ok.

Maybe it means that the car has been prepared to remove the appauling hammerite paint finish that most new BMWs come with .... Quality control in the paint shop is obviously a concept that left years ago.

I would only buy an ex press fleet car if I was in a position to keep the BMW warranty in place for the duration of my ownership.

With the way Clarkson, Needell and Plato thrash them, plus road testers getting their acceleration figures, they're a gearbox and diff failure waiting to happen.

I if Im correct an F1 driver did huge donuts in Hyde Park in it for most of an afternoon.

On the other hand, my M3 Saloon is ex-press and has been absolutely perfect! Gearbox and clutch fine, unmarked etc. Seems to pull a bit harder than other M3's too smile

No regrets.

If the car has a comprehesive warranty, then it might not be so bad.

Maybe try and use it as a haggling point .... especially if you can find some photo evidence / videos of that actual car in tests and reports.

Would be interesting to hear from a dealer / trader to know if they would typically avoid or try and buy ex-press cars for less, or whether they have trouble selling them on.

Could this be it? Do they change the plates at all? It looks to be the exact same spec?

It might be OK, but wait until you claim for a busted gearbox and they won't pay due to "abuse".

Spandexx - The same with my last 3 cars (Only the last one was a BMW - the others were Italian), which were all ex-press/Fleet cars. Not a single fault recorded. The manufactures went to pains to point out the severity of their warranties.

Keyboard Warriors abound on public forums. Ignore the lot. They are full of unfounded opinions & wind.

Buy the car with confidence...

Phantom.

Agreed that sometimes the 'keyboard warrior' effect comes into play with these type of threads.

BUT...

Seriously after being on the bad end of BMW warrenty with a plain Z4 i would not want to have a warrenty claim pending on a Z4M.

If Driving Republic and other mags are to go by, the car would of been oversteered into every possible yorkshire corner, to get that perfect photo or doughnutted around hydepark for the crowds eek !

Saying that it could of been really well looked after and as long as the wear and tear items have been replaced nothing in theory should go wrong lets face it no one drives like miss daisy in these.

I bought a press Mini once. It had been used in a couple of photo shoots in Autoexpress, still had the same plates when we bought it, never had any problems. I emailed Auto Express to ask their opinion and they said that Press cars are often taken through an 'extra level of quality control' and are often I good buy. He also confirmed, in my case, that because it was only a 'special edition' car rather than a complete upgrade and hence road test it was simply used for photo shoots etc.

I got a copy of the mag with it in too. :-)
