I'm only 2 weeks into the process of trying to find 'My' M3 and I'd forgotten what an utter ballache buying a car could be

Some peoples idea of "full service history", "immaculate" and "first to see will buy", good grief!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

(sorry, rant over , NSWBR)

Why's the SatNav so important to you? It's crap.

It looks great, but its not a good tool. Used my Dad's TomTom recently (had a loan car when mine was being serviced) and it took me a route through London I've not found in 7 years here. I've used it every time since and is by far the quickest way to get from my place to my g/f's place.

My BMW nav wont even take me that route even if I start off going that way. Love the screen, but its not a great bit of kit, IMO.

I'd disagree. At the price level you'll be selling at in say 2/3 years time most won't give a monkeys. Yes, if it was £15-20k but not at ~10-12. Save some money, or widen your choice, or get a better car, and get one of the 'undesirable' ones without Satnav....

I had a Z4 with the "Professional SatNav" & concur that it is absolute poo. Yes, it looks great when it swivels out of the dashboard but BMW take the piss out of their customers. The DVD map (on the Mk iv current unit) is provided by a Dutch Company - NAVTEQ BV. The maps are only updated twice a year in March & October. they are denoted by the year & half year - eg 2009-01 or 2009-02. BMW will charge you £250+, twice a year for these maps - on top of the ridiculous £2000+ you paid for the SatNav unit.

Furthermore there is no "Speed Camera" option & if you do buy a DVD map off eBay with the speed camera database (robbed from PocketGPSWorld.com!!) added, there is no audible warning. The BMW SatNav is crap - full stop. (I know because I used to sell the latest maps with the Speed Camera Database added...). Buy a £99 TomTom & update your maps daily for free. Pay £19.99 to PocketGPSWorld for 12 months subscription to their INTERNATIONAL Speed Camera Database & get audible pre-warnings of speed cameras. YOU program the distance of the warning!!

And just a footnote: I now have a Z4MR WITHOUT BMW SatNav, but now use a cheap TomTom XL that is generations better, with daily free map updates. It's far more accurate than the BMW system, I can customise voices as I wish & the 7 digit Postcode search ACTUALLY works.....

Who gives a poo about "swivelling SatNav dashboards" if they don't work as advertised & paid for (£2000+).

The BMW SatNav is CRAP - & far too basic/expensive. It is 3rd world technology.

I'd rather pay £2000 to not have one of those ridiculous stick on contraptions on my car!! They are the equivalent of a bluetooth headset.

But he's right though, it was part of my criteria to have a Z4M with Pro Nav.
Better to have than not to have. I used mine coming home from Birmingham - not that I needed it and it's not exactly difficult to find your way back to Aberdeen with all the massive road signs ;-)
It did speak utter crap telling me at one point to turn off the motorway which was ridiculous. Then warned me of stationary traffic ahead...and the road was clear. Still...

Yes Gareth, but think how cool it looks as it swivels out of the dashboard...

I wanted the Sat Nav when i bought my M3, but i figured that at the end of the day other things were much more important, ie condition, age, mileage, service history. All these things your stuck with once you have the car, the sat nav unit can be retro fitted. Thats what im going to do once my bank account has recovered!

I agree totally, but as stated above I'm at the mercy ofthe finance company, theywont finance the car if it hasnt got it (has to be recorded at BMW UK as a factory option!)

Find a different finance company, or get a personal loan ...... or save up! Why would you want to go to a finance company that restricts the cars that you can buy on the basis of what boxes were ticked half a decade ago, rather than on what the car is REALLY like.

Yes, I can well imagine the heaps of st out there at the moment.
The market is so saturated because e46 m3 is affordable to even more folk, yet they probably can't look after it.

For example, when I had my e46 m3 - Tyres, an Ins 2 and renewing the warranty were almost £2k and those are anticipated costs.

As much fun as it is to trawl Autotrader and Pistonheads, your best bet would be to regsiter on Mtorque and buy a car from a previous owner.

Peace of mind in some senses as you can see some of the old posts from owners who are selling their cars.

And relating to Sat Nav, how else would you run your Intravee set up! LOL
