Hi everybody! I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas about a slight problem my car has developed.
I noticed that is is starting to hesitate slightly under hard acceleration (3rd gear, 4,5,6000 revs) It's not a major issue but being used to how the car goes I am definitely noticing it's not quite right.

Has anyone please got any ideas about what it might be? The car is standard except for a DaveF induction kit. It's done 77,000 miles & is on it's original Vanos, which is occasionally slightly rattly but nothing major.

Thanks very much for any advice!
Ben

DaveF induction kit.
Congrats, your MAF is buggered. New one from Euro Car parts should not be too much.

Why is it you appear to make a colleration between the two points there?

Genuinely curious...

Thanks for the replies....I had wondered this to be honest, isn't it something to do with the oil from the DaveF kit affecting the MAF??

I have a K&N induction kit fitted and mines started doing this recently. I've found the problem to be the flexi round plastic tubing between the engine and the MAS plastic housing. It has developed some splits in a few places. I reckon the addition of the induction kit has added some weight and some flexing which has caused the splits. The original air box is held firmly in place and doesn't flex. Anyway. Apparently a new piece is around £50 from BMW?

Start with the MAF.

I've never had any problems with the induction kits, but many report hesitation at higher RPM's due to the MAF being knackered. Try cleaning it first though.

As said, clean the MAF with some electrical contact cleaner. Have you recently oiled the K+N? If your MAF is buggered they are about £200. Stick the standard air box back on.

I bought cleaner ready to do this for maintenance.

Do you need a special tool to remove the MAF, it looks like a torque bolt, but with a raised part in the centre to stop you using a standard tool.

Its a T20 security torque screw. 'Security' being the key word. Halfords sell them which is convienient.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Last time I cleaned & oiled the filter was around 4 months ago & I was careful not to over do it, I think! I will start with cleaning the MAF then as I haven't done this before....& hopefully will be a cheap fix!!
Cheers

Over oiled K&N filters kill the maf sensor, In fact i'd stay just stay away from oiled filters alltogether on anything with a MAF

Mine's running fine with a Dave-F at the moment, but I read on here about fitting an E46 M3 airbox as an alternative and I'd prefer this to an induction kit if it's going to kill my MAF

Has anyone tried this setup or have any information about how to fit one? Ta

Don't bother oiling the K&N then!
I'd take a MAF a year for the noise! ;-)

K+N filters need oiling to do any sort of filtering. They rely on it.

Cheers for all the info on this. Think I'm going to try cleaning my MAF first & see if this helps before I get a new one.
Very careful with the oiling of the filter in the future too!
