Noticed when I started my car today (98 m3 evo) the red engine oil level light was flashing but it still goes out after 10-15 seconds. So I checked the manual which says the following:

''If the warning light flashes a fault has occurred and engine oil level is not being checked; please contact bmw service''

So I've just gone and checked my oil level and it seems fine. Does this mean it's something small like a fault in the sensor that checks the engine oil level? Anyone had this problem or enlighten me on the solution?

Thanks

Done it again since, or just a one off? Was the car parked on a slope?

oil level sensors seam to fail on evo's quite a lot, could be this.

happened to me on my 1999 evo yesterdy in a homebase carpark. There was me removing undertrays etc in the car part tospot if I had lost any oil. Lucklily later found out that it is indeed a oil level sensor. common problem. the light will flash 9 times to warn of low oil level. replacement part is over £100 from BMW, so most owners live with it.

In that case, a breakers yard would be a safe bet.
