E36 M3 evo SMG lost reverse - help
Discussion
Alright fellow P.H.
Can anyone help I have a 99 evo smg (only 57k miles)and reveres has stopped working there is also a warning light appeared on the dash displaying a cog?(cant find anything in the hand book but can guess what it means)
I was hoping that the warrenty purchased with car would cover the repair but just been informed that it will not!!
BMW are telling me that a new selector cable is needed but the are not saying if this will fix the problem as further tests would need to be run? so far looks like over 1k with no guarantee of a fix!!
Has anyone had simular problems and maybe share there experience with cause and fix?
Thanks guys

At the moment this appears to be commen down this way, ive seen and spoken to several guys with the same issue...not always reverse.
If its the same as these then the hydraulic pump failed to prime or lost pressure and didnt switch back on.
On the drivers side under the bonnet between the pump and pump resevoir is a small black housing...in it are a couple of fuses and a green cap relay.
Take the relay out and carefully remove the green cap-it will come off with a small screw driver.
Check the contacts of the relay, you may find they have burnt out.
if this is the case then the relay needs to be replaced and the fault memory cleared down-it still wont find the gear untli the memory is clear.
Also 1 was the gearbox speed sensor which had cracked and was allowing moisture in
