Rear Motorsport Rims on Front??
Discussion
Strange question, but has anyone tried running the 8.5" rear genuine E36 M3 motorsport rims on the front of the an M3 Evo?
Three reasons I ask:
1- It would allow me to fit wider tyres on the front. Standard rims are only 7.5" wide so 225 is the widest you can go (recommended)
2- It would allow me to swap wheels front to back during track days for even wear rate
3- Perhaps (can't get me head round it) it will allow me not to require spacers on the front when I get coilovers
Of course, i could just swap them round myself and go for a drive, but it's -1.5 degrees outside so hoping someone has tried it already

I've just put 255's on the rear of my'n and they fit fine.
But to put the rears on the front, that is just silly!
They would stick out far too much, the arches would chop the tyres in half and look ridiculous!
And this would also upset the handling! The steering is bad enough without doing this!

That is of course assuming the are the same offset then yes they will stick out further, well 0.5" to be exact, no worse than sticking 15mm spacer on which plenty of people do when running coilovers. But to put the rears on the front, that is just silly!

IMO there is no need for 255's on the rear, but 235's on the front would be great.

No it's not a silly idea especially if you are considering a brake upgrade as you need a minimum of an 8x17in rim on the front for the AP 4 pot kit. However running with 255 on the front is silly but the OP didn't suggest that's what they were going to do.But to put the rears on the front, that is just silly!

Anyway back to the original questions.

I can't remember exactly if I tried to fit my 8.5" rears on the front or not, I'm pretty sure I did in order to see if it would be viable option with the AP kit. I seem to remember they fouled the inner arches on full lock (mines lowered on AST coilovers) but don't quote me as it was a long time ago. Basically it's not a good idea.Three reasons I ask:

The option I went for was to buy a new set of 8x17in rims which are fairly cheap anyway (MV2 replicas, £250). The advantage was they were lighter than the original motorsport alloys, let me fit my APs on the front and like you say give the option if you want to run with the same tyres all round. I'm running with 255 at the back and 235 on the front (currently on Corsas but 235 R888 waiting to go on all round) and they do not foul the coilovers. The handling is excellent but then again my has been extensively set-up.

I never mentioned 255's on the front!?

it doesn't have to be 8in wide rim, you could use a 2 in wide rim! It's the offset thats the dilemma or indeed for really big brakes also a bigger diameter rim.
That's not true. You shouldn't run anything wider than 225 on a 7.5" rim, on the road you'll get away with it, but not recommended for the track, you'll end up with the tyre overlapping the rim during hard cornering and braking, distorting the tyre and reducing the effectivness of the tyre. See here - http://www.alloywheels.com/tyrecalc.asp235 should be fitted to an 8" to 9.5" rim.

Neither did I. If you read it - "IMO there is no need for 255's on the rear" Don't know why you both thought that
Anyway, that's another topiic.scz4 said:

Anyway, that's another topiic.Just like the porsche 997 C4S with ludicrous 305's on the back which are wider than the C2's and it also has 4wd!!!!
Actually the grip of my new 255 F1 GoodYear GSD's are amazing compared to PZeros in the wet.
