I've just been speaking to BMW and I was not aware that you can buy a warranty for a car that has lapsed it's BMW warranty. It seems to cost approx 15% more than just extending it and like the extended warranty it jumps in price by a huge amount when the car is over 60k.

There is also a one month delay before the policy comes into effect which I assume protects them from people developing a fault and then getting it fixed for free.

The other condition is that services MUST be done by BMW and the car must have a full BMW service history. You are NOT permitted to use independents like you can with simply extending the warranty.

It leads me to think paying a large premium for a car with a warranty is not worth it.

Please let me know your thoughts. I'm considering an 03 M3 and would like some protection but it's likely to be over 60k so I'm wondering if the warranty is worth it.

For some reason that made me spit out my coffee biggrin

The downside though is that you have to have the car serviced at BMW, which typically costs a fair premium over independent servicing.

I thought this practice had been outlawed?

It is not enforceable on the extended warranty.. but the ones you buy from them it seems reasonable that they can put their own conditions on.

The previous extended warrenty had the BMW history clause in it too. Block exemption rulings only covered the original factory warrenty I believe. Any further warrenty is effectively insurance and they can put whatever clauses in that they want.

Another tip - if you choose to pay monthly then you don't have to notify them when you hit 60k miles and the warrenty remains the same price each and every month until you cancel (from a user on MTorque).

Can anyone clarify this bit as mine is under AUC warranty, just had my plugs and vehicle check done at the dealer (no probs there) but I was considering having the pads done at an independent when they are due in a few months.

Clarify what? A pad change isn't part of the service history anyway.

The only things you need to use a dealer for to get full BMW history is the items listed in the service book requiring stamps?
