Afternoon all,

With the falling prices, economic downturn and latest interest rate drops it seems to me that now is probably the time to stick my toe in the water in regard to this particular engineering masterpiece. M5's are now reasonable money (sub 30K for a 2 year old model etc.)

Clearly buying one of these monsters is not a task lightly undertaken but, on the upside - what a fabulous opportunity to own one of the finest "family" cars money can buy.

My question(s) then to all M5 owners I guess are:

How much should I expect to pay for an extended BM warranty on one of these? I can't get any sense out of my local dealer.

What are the expected running costs, I am not wholly sure how many MPG they do on longish trips with delicate right leg operation?

Is it still an easier option to go for a relatively normal M3 or would the costs be comparable perhaps?

Any advice greatly appreciated. The cheque book is twitching..!

Thanks,
C

Extended warranties will ultimately be dependant on how many miles it has on the clock (lower = cheaper). I would be budgeting no less than £2k per annum.

Budget on 12mpg - perhaps 15mpg if your very lucky.

Also at best I would be expecting these to take another 10k hit on depreciation in the next year.

Factor in a set of tyres, a service and the above and you could be looking at a hefty £18k per year.

That said I have lost 20k on my M3 in 6 months and another 8k on fuel, tyres and servicing (makes my previous rides somewhat cheap as chips).

In summary it will cost you a heap but if my 'M' experience is anything to go by it will be good money spent biggrin

Oh and I forgot insurance!

M5 ownership so far...4 weeks in..

2 rear tyres £500...will expect 8 to 10k out of these

just about to do plugs and vehicle check £380 - plugs won't need doing again for another 40k...

oil not due for 8k miles yet....

front pads due in 3,500 miles

MPG 17.1 at the mo. with mixed driving involving the frequent hoon....on a motorway trip though it sees 20+ no probs...

Not sure why so many put the frighteners on the running costs...just as long you have the warranty to protect yourself, the servicing isn't too bad as long as you don't expect ford focus priced servicing!!!

When I think what I used to pay for SAAB & Audi servicing a fair while back, the M5 isn't that bad considering what pleasures you get in return

As for the warranty 12 months renewal £1200 for sub 60k miles with the option to pay monthly...

Thanks for your fast responses.
The car I have in mind, but have no way set my heart on has 60.5K miles so I guess this is high for a car less than 3 years old.
I will call BMW anyway to see how much the warranty is for sure.
Re: tyres... is it the makeup of the compound or the excessive wear from 500+ HP that causes them to require replacement after 8-10K? I am estimating 14-20K mileage PA meaning that I an probably only extend the warranty twice as my current beamer can't me warrantied now it is over 100K.
Food for thought me thinks!

The latter really. If you do a lot of motorway miles 15K is defo doable, 20K quite possibly on the fronts. Really depends how you drive it, if you drive it like a M5 though and boot it out of every junction and hang on it around roundabouts, well, I'd be expecting to change at least every year tbh.

The fronts should be quite good, I'd guestimate around 1.5x the life of the rears.

FWIW my datapoint here is a e46 m3, yes its lighter, yes it has less power, but it must be broadly similar. In the 15K or so I had it (bought AUC with 6mm on rear and front) I had to change all 4 tyres about 7K later (rears were shot and I wanted michelin PS2's - SERIOUSLY good tyres). The rears were shot 8K later when I sold the car (literally on the bars) but the fronts still had about 4mm. I was just being a B-road menace.

I got 12k out of my first set and I am not gentle. The Contis are very hard though and I suspect the PS2s I have on now will not last so long.

60,500 is a bit on the high side...and the warranty I believe is more once over 60k..

Also if the 60k M5 you're looking at is at Big Motoring World then it may be worth doing a search for opinions on buying from them....whether they be good or bad scratchchin

Yes,
It was them but it's been sold now so my decision is made.
Hopefully, whomever buys it might appear on here to let us all know what great value he/she has got.
Personally, I like the place. Direct sales and no bull**** from the salesman and 3-4K off beamer pricing. As long as the car is still in warranty there's not much more than can go wrong. They've been there for years too and it's nice to look around all the different models.

How are you liking it? I mean, what a car for 25K - that's S-MAX money! My C4 Grand Picasso was 22K and doesn't go quite as well as an M5.... (although I do try to make it) :-)
The warranty is the essential item. I even extended the warranty on my 530i MSport when I had the chance.... it's just the sensible thing to do I think. Nothing went wrong with it mind!

What colour one did you get? There is a (and I quote from a fellow pistonhead) 'Biro Blue' one on AutoTrader with 9,000 miles for around 28K.

Loving it..geting used to the SMG day by day, and the noise is superb, never heard a V10 before and it's just addictive...

Bought it in Silverstone with Black Interior...see below

Hi guys, just joined. I've noticed too how much m5's have come down and i'm thinking of purchasing one. Again i'm just thinking about running cost. I'm a petrol head myself so as long as its managable i dont mind throwing money at it. Could come in handy for the trip to the ring also! This maybe obvious but what does 'AUC' mean? Cheers guys.
