Dear All,

I've been following the forums for many years now with great interest, and I've decided its finally time to join the M-power club.

I'm looking to buy an E36 M3 EVO some time in the next month or two, and have read lots of advice on what to look for and avoid when buying etc.

Although I've seen a few cars from the outside, none of my friends have owned this car and what I would really appreciate is the opportunity to have a detailed look at a good model, so that when I do go to look at cars to buy I'll have some sort of bench-mark to compare things to!

If any forum members live near Cambridge (I would be willing to travel!) and could spare the time to help out a genuine enthusiast, I would be most grateful.

Daniel

You might find a few volunteers, I'm not sure, but why don't you go see a few? That way you'll get a feel for what is on the market at the different price points, and how they drive.

There have been a few discussions on what to look for, try a search to find the buyer's guides.

I'd happily show you mine, but I doubt you'll find another like it for sale (in terms of mods and condition).

I will be in Cambridgeshire (between CB and Huntingdon) on weekend of 1/2 Nov if you want to have a look round. Great car and mine just might be up for sale soon

Hi Daniel - Best to let you know that my car isn't standard any more but you're welcome to have a look ( 1997 EVO with 77K miles - I'm in Huntingdon).

Some advocate sticking to factory spec, some go with upgraded coils/ARB's/ shocks and some have fully adjustable coilover setups. Whichever your preference I'd try to check out cars with relatively recent suspension work because it's fair to say that most EVO's on original suspension, bushes etc will be feeling very tired now.

Thanks a lot guys for your offers!

You're right dan101, going out to test drive a few cars is sure to help me get more familiar with the model... I'm just wary of doing what so many warn against in terms of not being able to resist the temptation of buying the first one I see rolleyes

For me I'd like to be able to have a proper look at a car without feeling the owner wants me to buy it on the spot... also would be pretty handy to know where the bonnet release handle etc are positioned so I don't look like an idiot!

Crackie you make a good point about the suspension, sounds like most cars could benefit from having bushings + shocks etc replaced around 70-80k, I'd be interested to see what 'factory standard' suspension feels like when fresh as having not driven one before, it would be hard to tell if suspension softness was due to the age of the car or the e36 just not being quite as stiff as the e30 or e46...

From looking at a lot of ads it seems most cars will not come with replaced suspension parts so obviously it would be best to know beforehand whether I'd want to renew the stock suspension or upgrade to something aftermarket.

Anyway, I'll pm you guys to see if it is possible to arange something further thumbup

So hopefully it looks as though I'll be able to have a guided tour of some nice M3 EVOs before I start chasing up and down the country for a car to buy...

All the kind offers I've had till now (which I really appreciate btw) have been to see modified cars with uprated suspension... Fantastic to see what aftermarket mods can bring to the M3, it seems these cars have the proudest owners!?

Or can any of the OEM purists encourage me to stick with standard suspension? I would also be really interested to hear from anyone nearby who has recently replaced suspension components like for like in an attempt to keep the car original... I'm still unsure which road I want to go down!

All advice much appreciated,

Dan
