Evenin' chaps,

Out of pure interest, what's the top end of a de-restricted E46 M3?

170 tops?

Ta, in advance.

I'd say about 165mph realistically, depending on mileage etc. The limiter is more of a soft limiter anyway- I've seen 170mph (speedo reading) in mine and still not hit it.

True. Not restricted in 5th. Not that I have tried of course :-)

I have seen "internet figures" as high as a claimed 185 (GPS) when derestricted, but don't forget that they will be chipped for a bit more power as well if the restrictor has been removed. Given that would be about 360 BHP and a it has a low coeffient of drag (cd) it is not an unfeasable figure.

On a related note I have not checked mine with the GPS to see how accurate the speedo is. Anyone here tried it?

I have found them to be about 7mph high at those speeds.

185 from an M3? I would say that was about 10mph too high, even with the wind behind you.

I've had 165mph out of my old e46 M3 before the limiter kicked in, the car was still pulling. I read on i think wikipedia that the straight six engine in the E46 M3 is capable of 184mph if de-restricted. Awww i miss my M3, have a 987 Boxster S and to be honest, not as much fun.

I've had mine upto 179mph roof up (reading from GPS Road Angel) and 169 roof down (reading from GPS Road Angel). Didn't feel very stable with roof down but with roof up felt fine. Seemed to take forever to get there once you get above 165mph or so.

With regards to the speedo being out, I find on the correct tyres it out by about 5mph however with a pair of 265's on nthe rear it is pretty much spot on +/-1mph.

That must have been on a very long piece of road. My M3 is de-restricted and has only ever managed about 165mph at Brunters. Even CSLs don't seem to do more than 1 or 2mph better.

I'm amazed if you can get 179mph unless you were going down a pretty big hill at the time.

2 different streches of road, roof up M18 heading from M1 across to A1. Roof down M6 toll from Birmingham to London. The roof down run was the day I'd had it mapped and de-restricted (approx 3yr ago) and the M18 run was only about 6 month ago.

You where doing those sort of speeds on public roads, you mad man.

Especially with the roof down, had you been caught you would have been gang banged by the forces.

pillock. You'd go to jail for those speeds if caught.

Wow, you typed that erudite response and still got it so wrong you had to edit it, your parents will I'm sure be very proud. Based on the way this site seems to be going of late you'll fit in well here with such a level on conversation. If you actually want clarity, which I suspect you don't as you of course have all the answers already, pop on over to MTorque.co.uk and post the same statement. There will be several people on there who will give you facts and figures, people (like me) who have tried it and know its rubbish and people who build them and race prepare them who will also confirm the same thing.

No point me trying to convince you as you will try and lower me to your base level and win on experience.

Yes, Mr Amoeba, I have, and legally. I bought my first E46 M3 when I lived in Germany.
