I am in the process of selling my Porsche 996 C4S and i have just spotted some 2005 M6's at £35-£40k at BMW dealers which for a 500bhp £80k car when new is very tempting. Anyone here ran one or know anybody who has ran one? Whats the running and servicing costs like? Can you get a used warranty scheme similar to Porsches £1k a year warranty? Any known problems?

I ran a 645Ci for 6months and it was faultless to be honest.

Stick with Porsche, on a sliding scale they appear to resist falling residual values most, of all the performance manufacturers.

The only problem with the M6 as I can see it is that BMW make the M5, plus there are now some E92 M3's down to 37K without haggling.

Not the answer to the question you asked but all the M6 owners will now go into overload with rage and come up with some valid reasons why you should buy.

The M6 will continue to be an exponential depreciator, but I think that Porsches are going to do a good job of matching those rates now, given the huge numbers of 911s sold in the last five years.

I saw a 997 C2S for £42k in the Berkeley Sq dealership two weeks ago. It will sell for less than £40k.

Awesome car and now an abolute bargain, go into it with your eyes wide open and you will love every minute of it!!

8-20mpg with an expected average of around 15 if you don't rag it everywhere.

Oil Service £2-300
Inspection I £500-900
Inspection II £750-1200

Those prices are main dealer depending where you are and presuming nothing else needs doing.

The warranty comes in 3 tiers now from just the driveline to fully comp. plus you can choose the excess you pay from £250 a claim through to no excess. Starts at around £500 a year for the most basic with big excess, and goes up to around £900 for full cover with no excess. Then when the car gets over 60k miles the prices go up.
One thing though, you can not take out the warranty once it has slipped, not like with porsche, you can't take it in and have the multi point check and then take the warranty out, once it has passed that is it. Also, if you buy priavtely with a warranty that is fine, if you buy from a dealer other than BMW the warranty becomes void, obviously that does not include the manufacturers warranty, but you need to make sure if you buy one with the extended warranty that the original owner can transfer the warranty over to you.

Oh, and expect to loose another £800 a month till they are sub £20k's in todays climate, other than that.......

Get one on the drive and enjoy it!!

Keep the Porsche, it'll retain alot of its value over the next 3 months (ie you wont lose huge amounts compared to the M6). Wait till Christmas, you'll see M6's hovering around the £22,000 mark. Part exchange it. Thats what I'd do.

£10k+ drop in eight weeks? Seems a bit pessimistic even in the current market.

Interesting with regards to value as Porsches have held there value very well in the the past but have recently fell into line with all other prestige cars. Surely the M6 will not fall as badly as the the 8 series did? Seeing 840's and 850's at £5k is strange as i remember drooling over them in High School when they first arrived.

I just think that it has more room than the Porsche, just as quick if not quicker in a straight line and was the best that BMW could do in 2005 with regards to all there technology so it must be a serious peice of kit.Write-ups in Autocar when first released were very favourable.

The only thing that bothers me is the MPG, i average 25mpg on the daily commute covering approx 250 miles a week in the Porsche and i have heard the M6 does 16-17mpg.

No, it will plummet. Do you have any idea how many Porsches are on the market at the moment?

A neighbour's son of mine bought an M6 convertible at the end of July. Out of curiosity I checked on Pistonheads and Autotrader how much they were fetching. Most were going for around the £60,000 mark. Just had a look again and seen one for £52,000 (I'm sure it is one of the cars I saw for sale then too, so it obviously hasn't shifted). So in around 8 weeks it's lost around £8000. I make that £1000 a week or there abouts. That is alot of money.

All this too was before the current climate was in panic mode (well to a lesser extent anyway). I wouldn't rule it out. Some of these hyper cars lose big money very quickly.

If we don't see an M6 between £20,000 to £25,000 come Christmas time I'll eat my words.

Well- I sold my 2004 996TTX50 and went for an M6!

My 996 sold for £60K privately in January 2008 - I have since seen very similar spec/age cars being advertised for £45K

So as far as depreciation goes, it is shocking on both!

As for M5 and M6 comparisons - I have driven both and they are totally different cars. Yes the engine and 'box are the same but the drive is very different.

Running costs - I have just done brake fluid and oil at main dealer for £300. The more expensive inspections/plugs etc. are quite infrequent - so I would think it it a lot cheaper that the Porsche in those terms. Fuel - I average 16-18mpg depending on how much time is on the motorway (15mpg around town - 19-20 on motorway) I used to average about 24mpg in the Porsche.

Most people who have been in it say it is more impressive than the Porsche. Personally, I love Porsches and now I have ticked the M6 box I will probably go back to one, but the M6 is so awesome I am not in a rush.

All IMHO of course!
