I'm guessing it's a coil spring washer / seat.

Is it not something for holding the spare wheel in place (i.e. you wind that down the thread and it pushes down on the centre of the spare to stop it bouncing around)?

Assuming that there is a spare wheel...?

Edit- actually scratch that, the middle is too wide. smile

It looks like either a spring seat or a suspension top mount plate. It must be the old one if it has had new springs.
If it was omitted when fitting the new one the fitter must have known about it. Wouldn't they?

Is it rubber or metal ?

If rubber it looks exactly like a larger version of a couple of floor bungs I recently replaced in the boot of my E38.

Could it be a bulkhead gromment that something like a loom/cabling etc passes through ?

That looks to be metal in which case its not from the rear.

Wrong shape for the shocker top mount washers. And if it was rubber its too small and wrong shape for spring pad.

Had most bits off and I dont recognise it.The closest resemblance to anything is the front shock top mount bearing carrier....But if that wasnt there the stut would collapse.
