Been looking at used examples of these and I am getting very tempted... although some of the best bargains tend to have around 30-40k on them...

Considering I'd keep the car for about 2 years and possibly add another 30-40k on it Im interested to hear from owners about their experiences on higher miles...

Are their any common issues to be aware of?

Do the running costs increase with worn parts needing replacing?

Any issues with the SMG 'box over 50k?

Thanks
Lee

My main concern would be the warranty.......above 60k it is circa £2200 for the BMW comprehensive warranty with no excess.

Really? I didn't realise that.

I phoned up the BMW Warentee people earlier this morning and asked how much to add an approved BMW warrentee to a used M% that is bought in a non-BMW dealership.

They said the car would be subject to a 'Used Car Aproval' ranging from £160 to £300 (dealer dependant)

and the warrentee would be £835 for one year...

also you are only able to buy one year at a time, and the car will have to go through the 'Used Car Approval' checks each time...

but I didn't realise that the price went up over 60k...

Do you know if that circa £2200 just for one year?

Im not sure... the car reg I quoted when talking to them said that this particular M5 had come out of its original warrentee on 31st August... so maybe them quotes I got are for an extention...? Which I would guess would be cheaper...

I didn't think you could extend the BMW warranty if it had lapsed for even a day?

Lee,

There have been some for sale on Autotrader with over 80k miles, so the 'box can take motorway miles very happily.

You are right warranty cant be extended if expired by even 1 day. Over 60K miles the costs become prohibitive.

Would I be bonkers to consider getting one WITHOUT a warrentee?

Get it inspected first AND checked by BMW on their diagnostic kit, then negotiate HARD!

BTW Warranty is how you spell it not warrentee!!;)

What you need to bear in mind mate is the potential for something expensive to happen - there's a lot of complex technology in there, so you'd almost need to go into ownership with a £10k contingency, just in case (that may be a slight exaggeration) if you go the no warranty route.

Bear in mind the depreciation is still likely to be pretty steep still on them
