I'm currently pondering on selling my current fleet (megane and vx220) so we can just have one car. I fancy something reasonably bokners and love the look of the z4 and was surprised to see the "M" is within our budget.

I know next to nothing about BMWs as a whole so would appreciate some info on the Z4M. What are they linke to live with daily? What are the service intervals and costs? Can you buy inclusive service packages from BMW? Are big bills an accepted part of ownership?

Thanks in advance!

i was in same boat as you yesterday. Went to see 06 z4m, as seen few in bmw dealers for 23k. love the look and the interior over porsche. Servicing costs put an end to that short love affair. I was quoted £300 for oil change, service 1 over £600 and service 2 over £1k. If any body here could verify this as i think the car is good value and possible purchase. Boxster/cayman far more resonable service prices and only every 20k.
Still thinking about an 07 3.0 z4 coupe with 3k on clock from bmw dealer for 21k as this should be cheaper to service and still provide some fun.

My last long term cars were:

Not so different from you.

I bought an 06 Z4MC and so far my first Oil Service cost £190 and my Inspection 1 due in about 1000 miles I am expecting to pay about £600.

Tyres are proving to be expensive too but that might have more to do with the way I punish the rears than anything else.

If you are trying to meld the best of a Megane and a VX220 in one car without spending silly money I think you will find the Z4 a very good choice. Not perfect but great fun and pretty darn quick too.

Those servicing costs seem ridiculous. Shop around, prices fluctuate massively.

Ive had min since 06 from new, oil service £190 next service due in 14000 miles so if its £600 I think thats OK for the performance, I use the car every day and I cant see anything thats is as good for the money, its the longest I have kept a car, its very usable every day also offers 911 performance and its a bargain at the moment at these low prices (makes me sick I waited 6 months for mine at list)buy one you will love it

Give some cheaper main dealer prices then, around London/SE those prices are cheap!

In terms of living with it, well it's a 2-door roadster that's high on power, so expect new rears every 10k and 18-30mpg (town-motorway). Tax is now north of £400, remember. Servicing will be £200 and £600 ish for Oil and Insp 1, main dealer anyway.

Mine's been reasonably reliable, one mysterious flat battery but nothing else bad.

Boot is a bit small, don't plan on putting any suitcases into it. Medium travel case will be fine, and a set of golf clubs will fit..

Great fun car though. Puts a smile on the face every time you drive it!

i was in the same position as your after crashing my first one, really really tempted by the Cayman/996.. like you say cheaper running costs (servicing and slightly more economical) however once you factor in the purchase price and the fact that for the same money you can get into a fully loaded 3 month old 2000 mile z4m its just makes more sense. That gives almost 3 years warranty and breakdown assistance too, factor that into the porsche that extra £2500+ the warranty would cost that easily covers the extra servicing and fuel costs.

also its af faster and much rarer car smile i'm sure someone will come in bleating about depreciation being better on the porsche, maybe, maybe not.. i dunnno. I get the feeling that in 5 years time cars like these will be so undesirable in terms of cost they'll be worth nothing anyway frown

I'm new here but have been tracking similar discussions for a while. Reason to blow cover - made plunge and now have Z4M Roadster. BMW AUC - just north of 23k for 2.5 yr old 23k miles and fully loaded (inc. all bell and whistles inc tracker, dvd nav, ipod, assist, dsp etc) - though long and hard about Boxster but for similar money an approved is 2003-4 with maybe 30k+ miles and usual porsche poverty spec.

The more sensible service figures etc tally with what i've heard and a big calamity is more boxster territory and bmw extended warranty will do me. More astonishing is the insurance quote of an admiral multicar... but that is to be finalised next week - have 7 days free BMW for time being.

Thoughts on driving - well weather has not been ideal - but wow... a case of bang for buck....low speed 1 & 2 gears are notchy - but that is recognised and much on www on replacing clutch valve...ride is hard / nobbly at time even on non-run flats that Z4Ms use. But thats the raods mostly.

First mod done - the twangy ariel has ben replaced with a neater 3" stubby affair from ebay.

Also meant to say ... quite a few around on AUC and prices much softer than Z4MC.

Those service costs are excessive. I paid £160 for the oil service (and quoted up to £210 ETA the same dealer that told me I had 3mm of tread left on the rear tyres. Two weeks later I measure them myself and amazingly they're 4 - 4.5mm. Hmmm. Business a lttle slow me thinks....) and have been quoted £661 for inspection 1 and £873 for inspection 2. There is also a brake fluid change at 2yrs (from build). I'm guessing about £80.

Inspection 1 is £840 + vat = approx £1k

The Inspection 1 is a total ripoff, but £1k?! Have you shopped about?

Nope, I can't remember the exact price but with VAT it's just short of £1k, mine is booked for end October, I just presumed all BMW dealerships would be the same price - any suggestions?

should be around 600 pounds..shop around for less. It's the inspection 2 that's a bit pricey

They have told me it is £840 + VAT for inspection 1 & they've sent me the two detailed pdf inspection sheets detailing the service.

They also said that any non-dealer servicing would invalidate the warranty - I don't know how I can shop around - surely all their network dealers are the same price? or not?

Depending on where the dealer is you might find labour charges differ, but you can have it serviced anywhere as long as the parts used are BMW items.

Thats what I thought but they told me unless they were BMW trained technicians then it would invalidate any future warranty claims.
