Picking up M5 on Friday
Discussion
I bought an E60 M5 on an 05 plate back in May. I love its subtelty and the HUD but it does attract tailgaters (momentarily at least). People who know about the M5 do give it a second look.
The dealer was a little tight on the negotations but I have nothing but praise for the service department.
I had a number of red cog events. These normally followed a thump from the drivetrain. They took it in, replaced the clutch, clutch position sensor, and eventually did a complete software upgrade. All under warranty! There were a few other things which niggled me (cup holder didn't pop out every time, drivers window caused a "jam" warning now and again and the remote didn't work more than 1 meter from the car) and they dealt with all of those under warranty too. I'll probably regret writing this but I have had no problems since.
I have had to change my driving style. In "D" (round town what's the point in using anything else but back on the paddles outside of course) it isn't an automatic. You can hold the car on the clutch if you get it right (possibly a red cog if you don't) but just use the hand brake. Remember it's an automatically operated manual NOT an automatic. I have had no problems with the paddles.
I run the car to the station each day and out and about at weekends. I manage 17mpg. You might find www.petrolprices.com useful! I don't do a massive mileage ~8K p.a. New tyres are about £250-300 a corner.
It drinks oil more than a normal saloon (hell it's not one of those) I feel but just keep it topped up.
I really don't know what I would ever buy to replace it...
