15k for an E46 M3 ... am I mad?
Discussion
Folks,
I'm in the market for an E46 M3 - from looking at the classifieds, there are quite a few up for grabs at this price. I would like Sat Nav, but am agnostic about SMG/Manual.
The only think that's making me nervous is that the AUC ones are 'sticking' at the 20k mark [unless you want a LSB or phoenix yellow one ] - which is making me think that ones that are up for sale for 15k privately are ropey.
I have a few more months of looking as mrs phatmanace won't let me get one until xmas.
cheers,
-Ace

I don't see why a 15k E46 M3 is anything to worry about.
That sort of money should net you a nice early example with sensible miles.
You'll be out of warranty at this price but providing it's a good 'un and you've done your homework I don't see what the probelm is.

Early E46s had problems with shells IIRC which was resolved in later models - would imagine that was the reference.
Seeing as you can now pick up an E46 M3 in a private sale for £11k, a £15k car is by no means at the arse end of the market.
Check it over thoroughly, look into the history, and if it all looks good, go for it! Certainly don't be put off by the price.

£15k can buy a facelifted (LED rear lights) '03 model can't it? I'd imagine that 03 models would still be fairly low-mileage (sub 100k) and have very good history to them, no? I'd wait till the end of the year personally, Christmas time + this credit crunch can only mean a buyers market for used performance cars.
I'm not sure £15K would get an '03 but you'd get a nice private 02 - 52 plate. I paid £17K for a 52 plate about 6 months ago which I would hope is worth £15K now and it's very tidy. Wasn't there an AUC for that sort of money knocking about recently??
It's also worth noting you'll find ropey cars at £20K, there is a massive difference in how people value their cars.
Go for it.

£15k will get you into a nice 2003 SMG car with sub 50k miles if you actually call some of the adverts out there.
You can retrofit the nav for £1000 and it only take around 4 hours for someone doing it for the fist time, so don't write off cars without it. Companies out there will do it for £1500 if you don't want to do it yourself.

I've just bought a 2002 M3 for 15K and it's a belter. 1 owner, Carbon black, 40k miles, HK sounds system and brand new 19 inch alloys. Had to travel to Ipswich to get it but the 8 hour 450 mile trip back to Scotland was a joy and she never missed a beat!! Moral of the story if you look hard enough you will find a decent one for 15k. Go for it!!

Hmmm, this is all rather worrying. I paid 18k for a 53plate EB M3 manual with 34k miles back in March. It's done 37-38k now and I've been considering getting rid of it for a 996, probably C4S - but I didn't realise it would have dropped as much a 3k in such a short time.
How depressing.
