Seems strange to me as I didnt notice anything changing with the handling. However from what I read this is fairly common and according to the indie they can only get new ones from BMW. Is this likely to happen again? I take it that changing to an aftermarket suspension kit would sort it out?

Yes it is quite common and is age related.

You can get OE springs from the likes of GSF and Euro Carparts though.

I've just replaced a rear Eibach spring which was not much over a year old; prior to that I needed to replace a standard one that was over 6 years old.

It's an easy DIY job even with standard springs.

Thats strange because the guys at euro car parts say they cant get hold of them and I have to go to BMW? If anyone knows the manufacturer let me know, its 175 quid for a pair from them!

I had a front driver side spring fail on my e36 evo when it was parked in the garage!

A new one from the dealers was around 70 quid I remember... and my mechanic mate had it fitted in under and hour - result smile

I've had one break, front near side. The bottom last turn snapped off causing the rest of the spring to rotate round cutting the tyre into 2 ! Not nice, but could have been worse, id just come back off the M1 an hour before, luckily i was going at 30mph when it went, although i dont know how long it had been broken the snapped surface of the spring was rusty.
