Can anybody tell me how to remove my wooden handbrake grip from my 97 M3 Evo saloon? Somebody said it simply twists and pulls off, but I cannot budge it?

Get a good tight grip, which maybe a little difficult on varnished wood, twist left to right and pull forward at the same time.

It doesn't want to budge. Gonna get myself some leather gardening gloves and give it another go.

Sadly it's because of the centre console that I'm looking at doing this - mines got various cracks and a "chunk" by the hazzrd switch actually missing. Mines a saloon so it wouldn't be any good for you because of the extra window switches. BMW want £454 for a new one eek

hi fellas
On the handbrake - it's definitely a twist and pull job. My evo's is movable after a minute's play. Do you think a previous owner might have glued it on because it will play a little when used?

On the wood interior generally - £454 sounds dear argue - I think the full wood interior was like £600 option when new. Check other dealers. phone

If either of you, or anyone else, has come across or in future comes across a mid-wood (I think they did different types of wood, light, dark etc) probably burr walnut, gear knob, just the piece that you take in your hand when changing gear, from an Evo i.e. 6 speed + reverse, WITH ILLUMINATION and a very good top picture, I'm interested. The only problem with mine is the top picture has flaked a little on the underside i.e. in an inaccessible position to do anything about it. I was just going to buy a new gear knob. I asked the local 4-5 dealers but they seem to be able to ideentify parts as like, normal lever, wood lever (but no type of wood indication - see above), illuminated lever etc but not burr walnut illuminated. banghead £89 for the wood one.

Finally, there was once a guy on eBay selling a veneer/sticker thing - a plastic coated veneer layer - to fit exactly over the e36 surrounds. The set included EVERYTHING, you received many more stickers than there is room for in my car - there were loads of buttons that were covered by the kit that I didn't even have! Not sure if its still up there.

Good luck either way.

I would consider myself a strong fella, but I cannot shift it even when wearing surgical gloves. She's in today having a new exhaust fitted so I've asked the garage to have a go. Otherwise it's out with the hammer!

With the saloon, the burr walnut (dark) was standard with no options to fit anything else.

My understanding is that the light stuff was special order and the option for the Coupe and Convertible (standard on the saloon) was dark burr walnut. I could be wrong though.

Also, if you're looking at secondhand gear knobs, I wouldn't get too hungup on the gear levers "speed" illustration as these are cheap to replace. i.e. you could source a 5 speed non M-tech gear knob and simply change the emblem to a 6 speed M-tech. My understanding is that they are all have the same fitment. And chances are that if it's an old one, then the emblem will contain air bubbles so you will want to replace it anyway.

I reckon it's going to look sh*te. And also, once stuck on, I guess there's no way back??

Although I'm going all black (or as much as I can), I want to keep all my wood bits just in case I want to return her back to standard. So I couldn't offer you my gear knob - sorry.

with regards to the emblem, there are a few selling on ebay. I wish to replace mine due to flaking but was not sure if the ones on ebay to allow the light through, any experiences?

I haven't used mine yet - also bought off ebay. I went for a genuine BMW one - looks good. I'm not going for an illuminated knob so probably cannot help.

The wooden one doesn't come off. You have to remove the whole handbrake lever itself (not too big a job). The black plastic/leather ones do twist off however.

Yup. The garage confirmed that the wood ones are glued on, presumably because wood is a natural material and can expand and probably drop off.

Thanks for all the info chaps.
