I'm heading off to oz for a year next month and have decided to put the M3 in my mates garage while I'm away. I was going to sell but its impossible at the moment and I'm not giving away a mint car for 5k, its daft! So, has anyone done this before and is there anyting preventative I can do before leaving?

Your best option is to put it in the trust of someone who will at least start it every so often. Leaving it sitting for a year will increase the risk of component seizure and big bills when you come back to it.

The prices have just got crazy at the moment. I had mine advertised here and autotrader and got 1 call in 2 months. Plenty of photos and a huge discription didnt seem to help either. Its the best all round car I have ever owned so I'm actually quite happy to keep hold of it.

as said, to store it properly is very expensive.

Better your mate takes it out once every few weeks for a drive to keep it all working and stops problems.

Carcoon, put some fresh oil in, leave the handbrake off, put a brick either side of one of the wheels. Pump the tires right up so if they deflate over time you hopefully wont come back to flats with deteriorated walls. Get your mate to start her up every month and bring her up to temperature and leave running for a couple of hours. keep battery on a trickle charger to maintain power.

Agreed... specially the handbrake comment.. bricks are better...;) get a little trickle charger called an optimate.. made for motorbikes.. but just the job. i used to mothball my porsche 6 months at a time... the alarm / immobiliser will kill a battery on its own in 3 weeks on some cars..
