Well it sounds like my ECU is well and truly dead. It's been for testing (suspected water damage) and they have left a message saying it isn't repairable.

So, what's the deal with replacing an ECU? Do you also have to replace/recode the EWS? Anything else? Any help appreciated!

There are two options:

Either get that comapny I sent you a link to, to send you a re-furbed one, or bend over and pay Siemens £1,500...

But does it then need coding to the EWS etc, or is it a simlpe plug 'n' play?

You will need to align the EWS with the "new" ECU. Someone like Phil Crouch from CPC can do this for you with Autologic.

Don't worry Charlie... I'm on the same commission deal as you.

Sorry mate, must be getting absent-minded in my old age,

http://www.bba-reman.com/

If they can't help, they will know someone that can.

A breakers yard is an option but then you'll need to have the ECU coded -most likely by the guys above. Better off getting them to supply you with a re-furb and then you don't run the risk of finding one that's suffered the same fate as your own.

Thanks all for the help on this one.

Heard back first thing from a company in Poole that have a replacement and can recode it to match, so I'm heading down there Thursday with the old one to get that sorted, then hopefully all will be sorted in time to get the car to the bodyshop on Saturday for its three weeks of bodywork lovin'.

I've just got that sneaky suspicion that it's going to turn out to be more than just the ECU...

You'll need the ECU itself of course, the EWS unit (behind the glovebox) and the EWS chip from the ignition key(s).

Pretty much everything!

Complete glass-out repsray, replace most of the exterior plastic trim, wheel refurb, new headlights/foglights.

One of the rear arches is bubbling, plus there's a small area coming through at the top of the windscreen, and 130k miles worth of stonechips all over the front end.

That must be costing you a fortune! I bet it will look brilliant when it is done though.

Who you using for the paint job? Just looking into a few different people to do my car as we speak.

Using a guy I know - he repaired the Z4 and the work was spot on.

His name is Mark, works at Owlsbury and comes highly recommended by me! Right side of London for you, Tom.
