Still having trouble with my E36 M3.

The problem started a couple of weeks back when it had sat outside in the rain - it started, then died, then wouldn't run, then did, now doesn't.

When turning the key the fuel pump isn't priming. Now today I have swapped the fuse, the relay and tried a new fuel pump, still nothing and still not priming.

I assume that the ECU sends a signal to the fuel pump to tell it to prime - so either that signal isn't being sent, or it isn't arriving.

I'm out of ideas on how to troubleshoot it now. I had tried connecting it up to Carsoft, but after working for a while it decided it couldn't communicate with any of the modules.

Anyone got any thoughts on next steps?

You mention ECU and rain which got me thinking.

The Evo can suffer from ECU problems due to water ingress. Drainage channels tend to block and rather handily, this causes water to collect in the ECU box smile

As it's a Siemens ECU, your local specialist will also more than likely be unable to read it (every other BMW before and after has used used Bosch units)which means your best option is to send it to one of the specialist ECU re-programmers in the Country. I'll see if I can dig out a name for you.

This of course assumes it is your ECU that has gone kaput, but from what you describe and the scenario in which it has happened leads me to belive that this is most likely to be your culprit.

Water ingess to the ecu is quite common for all E36's stupid place to put them.

You need to obviously check to see if this is the case-N/S of baulk head behind black panel by fuse board in engine bay.

I've already whipped the cover off the ECU cubby hole, and it was bone dry inside (although this was a few days after).

What's odd is that when I first connected it up to Carsoft it found some fault codes - I cleared them and it ran perfectly straight after, so I took it for a spin round the block. The next evening it refused to start, as it is now, and Carsoft became unable to communicate with any of the modules.

ASBO - if you've got a name that'd be very handy, cheers.

Don't suppose anyone knows the Siemens part number of the ECU?
