there is one on offer for £28.5K...but regardless:

What do you think would be a fair price for a well maintained good example?
what are the factors affecting price eg is mileage very important if the car is in good condition?
Is the year important?
Is the nr of owners important?
Does it matter if it is an import?

There is a lot of discussion on other forums regarding Sport Evo prices @ present. Check out S14power.com & S14.net, for example.

The price really depends on how much you want to own the last of the line E30 M3, i paid alot less than this 5 years ago when i bought mine.

Most buyers either want extremely low mileage cars, or cars that can be restored, although the number of parts that are no longer available is increasing. So i would say condition is everything.

With regard to the year, the Sport Evo was only produced during Jan & Feb 1990, last car coming off the line 22.02.1990, i think from memory.

Again number of owner not really important, most now are being kept long term, as investment.....

BMW only imported 50 Sport Evos into UK in 1990, most of the cars available will be imports, mine was originally registered in Italy, less damp conditions and no salt on the roads so body work is normally in better condition...

If you want any more info, let me know.

Might be worth checking out Nov 2007 issue of Evo mag, for write up on them, and yes it was my car that was used.

Everything Craig said.
Just as an example later half of last year a 35K ish mile Gaydon concours winning cars was advertised for £28K that car sold not 100% what the final price, but it was a minter.

What Craig says plus...

Prices, god knows! I paid £17k for mine 4 yrs ago with 88k on the clock, which was probably £2k too much. Now I don't feel so bad about it. Aside from the fact I'm doing a bare metal restoration due to rust I never spotted on inspection.

The number of owners is not important, providing the history is sound enough and traceable.

I guess a UK seller might ask more UK car, trying to trade on the exclusivity of being one of the 51. In reality the only difference is the check control unit in on a foreign language (English units on ebay all the time) and the owners book the same. A non UK car may have had side repeaters added for the MOT, so it is worth while checking the quality of the installation of those.

Look for condition and history first, mileage is secondary if you can prove the car has been well looked after. But, it all depends on you intended use. If you are going to USE IT then mileage may be an issue, if you are going to polish it the condition may be a priority.

Me, I use mine

Steve

P.S Good review of the car Craig.

Think it was around that sort of money, I saw it a few weeks ago and it has to be said it was stunning and looked like it had never been used.

Andy, this might be a silly question but do you think the value of your E30 will be affected (+/-) by the respray? Thinking some people baulking at "non-original paint" perhaps?

No way, the main thing that is keeping me from picking up another e30 m3 is potential hidden rot issues.

Looking at the level of detail, Andys car would be very attractive if it was for sale. As long as it doesnt fall apart like his last one wink

I would hope respraying it would effect its value compared to a car which hadn't been. Mine it should have added value as there was visible rust and fading.

These cars are 20 years old now and I would expect 99% have rust somewhere. Mine had patches which you would never have found without taking the car apart. for example here was some under the rear window rubber, invisible with the rubber on but once we dug it out there was a small hole which could then be sorted.

Also replaced a couple of bits underneath around the jacking points whilst we were there, would have lasted a while but didn't want to start welding again around the new paintwork in 18 months time.

I'm quite happy we've caught most of it and hopefully it will last for another 20 years.

Sport Evo's are the ultimate M3 icon and were greatly undervalued specially in the UK. The prices have risen and will continue to do for the next few years and will rise again when it becomes 25 as the prospective buyers spectrum will broaden to US buyers (federalization issues) and general European collectors. As a matter of fact there are companies and individual US collectors buying these cars and storing them in near Canadian borders until they are 25years believe it or not. The prices will explode then like it happen with lesser cars that turned 25, for instance a good Renault 5 Maxi turbo will fetch in excess of £30k.

I bought an already good one for £20k six months ago and spent the best part of 12k on a nut and bolt restoration making it a Concourse winning car. I wouldn't sell it for less than £35k so the prices may vary wildly... smile

Whats the issue with cars under 25 years old in the US?

I know the guy I bought my E30 M3 off emigrated to the US and wasn't aloud to import the E30, I think it was due to emissions.

Cars with less than 25 years old need to be "federalized" which means fitting airbags, side markers on the bumpers, etc...
